Chapter 15

Claire blamed herself for the eyebrow injury.

She had been sent inside minutes before it happened.

Vanessa told her Audrey wanted lemonade.

Claire obeyed.

When she returned, Audrey was bleeding.

“You couldn’t know.”

Claire shook her head.

“I knew Vanessa was getting worse.”

“Not enough.”

“I should have stayed.”

“Maybe.”

She looked surprised.

I would not insult her with easy absolution.

Then I continued.

“But the person who hurt Audrey is responsible for hurting Audrey.”

Claire started crying.

Different truths can exist together.

She wished she had acted sooner.

Vanessa still made the choice.

Matteo moved the cart.

Enzo built the plan.

Responsibility did not need to be stolen from one person to acknowledge another’s regret.

Claire remained Audrey’s maid.

More importantly, Audrey’s person.

My daughter trusted her.

That mattered more than rank.

I changed one household rule.

Any staff member could interrupt me directly regarding Audrey.

No chain.

No permission.

No “Mr. Castellano is in council.”

The first person to test it was the gardener.

He walked into a meeting because Audrey had climbed onto the low fountain wall.

I stared at him.

He almost apologized.

Then remembered.

“Sir. Audrey.”

I left immediately.

She was fine.

Proud of herself.

I got her down.

Later one capo joked:

“So now gardening interrupts business?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He stopped smiling.

I meant it.

A family organization that collapses because its boss steps out to protect his child deserves to collapse.

Enzo would have called that softness.

Maybe it was.

I had spent enough years pretending hardness was automatically strength.

Audrey did not need a father whose men feared interruption.

She needed one she could reach before the fall.
