Chapter 13

The engagement never resumed.

Six months after postponement, Vesper and I ended it formally.

No betrayal discovered that day.

No new scandal.

Just clarity.

We sat in the garden.

She had changed.

So had I.

But the question was not whether she was now better.

It was whether trust between us could carry marriage.

Mine could not.

She knew.

“I kept hoping change would earn the wedding back.”

I looked at her.

“That’s not why you should change.”

“I know now.”

Good.

She removed no ring because she had stopped wearing it months earlier.

Another sign.

Then:

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

She laughed softly.

“You always make that worse.”

Maybe.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

She looked toward the pavilion.

“I wanted to enter your family as someone who mattered.”

“You did matter.”

“That wasn’t enough for me.”

There.

Honest.

She wanted recognized power too.

Not wrong by itself.

The method ruined it.

I said:

“You should have demanded a real conversation.”

She answered:

“You should have realized I was asking.”

Both.

That was the closest we came to closure.

Then she smiled faintly.

“You’ll be impossible for whoever comes next.”

“Assuming there is someone.”

“There will be.”

“Why?”

“Because men who insist they’re done are always lying.”

I almost laughed.

Maybe.

She left Blackthorne without exile.

Returned to her own family.

Built a charitable foundation with Sabine.

No access to my organization.

No punishment beyond lost trust and lost future.

Some relatives called that soft.

May you like

They were welcome to marry her themselves.

No one volunteered.
