Chapter 11

Julian requested one meeting.

Sofia agreed after her doctors cleared her to leave the hospital.

The triplets stayed home with professional nurses.

Lorenzo did not attend.

That was Sofia’s choice.

Julian sat across from her with attorneys present.

His face still showed the fading bruise from Lorenzo’s punch.

Sofia looked at it once.

Then never again.

“Did you plan to divorce me before the babies were born?”

Julian looked down.

“I was considering it.”

“When?”

“Second trimester.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wanted to know what happened after they were born.”

“What does that mean?”

He struggled.

“I thought you might finally understand why we needed distance from your father.”

“So if I agreed to cut him off, no divorce?”

“Maybe.”

Sofia stared.

“That’s not marriage. That’s an ultimatum you forgot to tell me existed.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“I was scared.”

“Of Dad?”

“Of everything around him.”

That part was real.

He described years of watching security men scan restaurants.

Cars following them.

Family dinners where men discussed people disappearing from businesses overnight.

Conversations that stopped when Sofia entered.

Lorenzo showing up with armed guards to ordinary events.

Julian’s fear had grown after the pregnancy.

Three babies made every risk feel multiplied.

Sofia listened.

Then asked:

“Why didn’t you put all that in a real custody petition?”

“Because I thought your father would bury me.”

“Legally?”

“In every way.”

“You had attorneys.”

“He has better ones.”

“That is not an answer.”

Julian’s voice broke.

“I didn’t believe I could beat Lorenzo Ravelli by telling the truth.”

Sofia looked at him.

“So you created a better truth.”

He flinched.

“Yes.”

That admission mattered.

Then she asked:

“Did you believe I was mentally unstable?”

“No.”

“Postpartum psychosis?”

“No.”

“Unable to make decisions?”

“No.”

“Did you believe I would hurt the babies?”

“No.”

Every answer stripped away another defense.

“Then why write those things?”

“I never wrote that you had psychosis.”

“You wrote around it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed enough uncertainty for a judge to keep the babies away from your father until things were evaluated.”

Sofia leaned forward.

“You weren’t protecting them from him.”

Julian looked at her.

“You were using them to force me away from him.”

Silence.

He began crying.

“I thought once we were somewhere else, you’d see I was right.”

Sofia’s expression did not change.

“You thought the outcome would forgive the method.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know your father was going to physically pick up Miles?”

Julian hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Did you know he would do it while I was in bed?”

“Yes.”

“Did you move my call button?”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted you to listen before staff turned it into chaos.”

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You wanted me to react before staff entered.”

Julian said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

Understanding his fear did not make the conduct less deliberate.
