Chapter 12 - THE CHILD IN THE CENTER

Adriano drove back faster than he should have.

Elena sat beside him.

Neither spoke.

That alone showed how much had changed.

Eighteen months ago, Adriano would have filled the car with orders.

Now he listened to Anthony through the phone.

Estate secure.

Sophia safe.

No visible breach.

One person missing.

Salvatore.

Adriano closed his eyes.

Of course.

Another old man.

Another hidden corridor.

Another grave that might someday prove empty.

When they reached the estate, Sophia was in Adriano’s bedroom with Lucian.

Victoria stood outside because Sophia became frightened whenever she entered.

Victoria did not complain.

Elena stopped at the end of the corridor.

Her daughter was twenty feet away.

Alive.

Awake.

Playing with the rag doll.

Elena’s face collapsed.

Adriano looked at her.

“Go.”

She could not move.

For eighteen months she had lived for this.

Now fear held her still.

“What if she doesn’t remember me?”

“She remembers your song.”

Elena began crying.

Adriano had seen her wounded.

Angry.

Bleeding.

Never afraid like this.

He took one step beside her.

Not in front.

Beside.

Sophia looked up.

The doll dropped.

For several seconds she stared.

Then whispered:

“Mommy?”

Elena fell to her knees.

Sophia ran.

No one in the corridor spoke.

Not Lucian.

Not Victoria.

Not the guards.

Adriano looked away because some moments did not belong to witnesses.

Later Sophia sat between her parents on the bed.

She touched Elena’s face repeatedly as if checking whether she was solid.

“Mommy home?”

Elena looked at Adriano.

Not yet.

He understood.

“For tonight,” Elena said.

Sophia accepted it.

Children accepted one night more easily than adults accepted uncertainty.

When she finally slept, Adriano and Elena left together.

Victoria waited downstairs.

When she saw Elena, she stopped breathing.

Elena looked at her.

Neither woman moved.

Victoria whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stared.

“For what part?”

Victoria had no answer.

Good.

Elena continued.

“You gave Lorenzo my movements.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he threatened me.”

“Yes.”

“You touched my daughter.”

Victoria started crying.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped closer.

“If Sophia ever wants to see you again, that will be her choice when she is old enough to understand what you did.”

Victoria nodded.

No forgiveness.

No theatrical reconciliation.

Only consequence.

Lucian watched his wife.

Their marriage might survive.

Might not.

That was not Adriano’s problem.

Anthony entered.

“We found Salvatore’s cane.”

“Where?”

“North gate.”

“Blood?”

“No.”

“Car?”

“Gone.”

Elena frowned.

“He left voluntarily.”

“Maybe.”

Adriano looked at her.

“You think Salvatore is Custodian.”

“One of five.”

“Who are the others?”

“Elena.”

She shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Adriano’s anger surfaced.

“You’re still keeping secrets.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I accept that?”

“You shouldn’t.”

She looked directly at him.

“But you should decide whether your anger earns access to everything.”

He stared.

Nobody spoke to Adriano that way.

Elena always had.

That was one reason he loved her.

And one reason she had survived him.

Anthony interrupted.

“Boss. There’s something in the old nursery.”

They followed.

Sophia’s original nursery had remained untouched after Elena disappeared.

Inside, the old rocking chair was moved.

Behind it, a panel stood open.

Another hidden compartment.

Adriano almost laughed.

His house had more secrets than rooms.

Inside was one bell.

Large.

Black metal.

Not silver.

No initials.

Elena went pale.

“That wasn’t there before.”

Adriano lifted it.

Heavy.

On its side was engraved:

FIRST BLOOD.

Victoria whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Elena shook her head.

Lorenzo, brought in under guard, saw the bell.

His face changed.

“No.”

Adriano looked at him.

“You know.”

Lorenzo sat down.

“The First Blood bell was destroyed.”

“Apparently not.”

“What is it?”

Lorenzo stared.

“When the Custodian system was created, one family member was chosen as emergency successor.”

“Heir.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Lorenzo looked at Adriano.

“The first son born after the pact.”

Adriano’s blood went cold.

“Which son?”

Lorenzo hesitated.

Elena suddenly understood.

“No.”

Adriano looked at her.

“What?”

She whispered:

“You.”

Silence.

Adriano stared at the black bell.

He had spent days hunting an heir to the shadow system.

The heir had been him.

Since birth.

Lorenzo continued.

“Giancarlo rejected it when you became older. He wanted you as boss, not Custodian.”

“Then?”

“Someone else kept the claim alive.”

Adriano looked toward the open panel.

A narrow strip of red cloth lay beneath the bell.

On it were three words:

HEIR HAS DAUGHTER.

Sophia.

Not target because she interfered with succession.

Target because succession could continue through her.

Elena’s face became cold.

“They don’t want to kill her.”

Adriano looked at her.

May you like

“What then?”

“They want to raise her.”
