Chapter 15

One year after the engagement reception, the Moretti estate held another gathering.

Smaller.

No announcement.

No engagement.

No people pretending celebration could erase what had happened in the house.

The Grace Moretti Music Foundation had awarded its first full year of grants.

Maria insisted on holding the reception in the same room as the piano.

Dante initially refused.

Then understood why she wanted it.

The room did not belong to Victoria’s betrayal.

It did not belong to Adrian’s fraud.

It belonged to the family before them.

And most of all, it belonged to Lily’s memories of her mother.

Near the end of the evening, Lily climbed onto the piano bench.

She was four now.

Her feet still did not reach the pedals.

Dante sat beside her.

Guests gradually became quiet.

Lily pressed the first note of Grace’s melody.

Then stopped.

“Daddy do it.”

Dante looked at Maria.

She smiled.

He played the next note.

Badly.

Lily corrected him.

They continued.

Slowly.

Imperfectly.

By the fourth measure, Maria was crying.

Dante nearly stopped.

Then he remembered something Grace once said whenever he became frustrated learning anything new.

Don’t turn mistakes into emergencies.

So he kept playing.

The melody reached the section Victoria had played a year earlier.

The section that exposed everything.

For one second Dante saw the engagement reception again.

The fallen glass.

Victoria grabbing Lily.

Adrian trying to escape.

Then Lily pressed the next key.

The memory changed.

The song continued.

Nobody took it away from her.

After the guests left, Dante carried Lily upstairs.

Maria remained behind closing the piano.

She found a letter waiting on the bench.

Rebecca had delivered it earlier that afternoon.

Adrian had written from prison.

He had not addressed it to Dante.

He addressed it to Lily.

Maria brought it upstairs.

Dante stared at the envelope.

“What is it?” Lily asked.

“Something from Uncle Adrian.”

She remembered the name.

Barely.

“Uncle Adrian come home?”

“Not for a long time.”

“Is he bad?”

Dante sat beside her bed.

“He did bad things.”

Lily considered that.

“Does he still love me?”

Dante looked at the envelope again.

That was harder.

Love had never been the Moretti family’s biggest problem.

Too many people in the family loved each other while lying, controlling, stealing, threatening, and deciding that loyalty excused the damage.

Adrian had betrayed Grace.

He had manipulated Dante.

He had helped place Victoria inside their lives.

He had also eventually accepted responsibility and helped return what could still be recovered.

None of those facts canceled the others.

Dante put the letter inside the drawer beside Lily’s bed.

He did not throw it away.

He did not open it.

Not yet.

“When you’re older,” he said, “you can decide if you want to read it.”

Lily yawned.

“You read it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s yours.”

She seemed satisfied.

Dante kissed her forehead.

Downstairs, the piano remained open beneath the soft lights.

Grace’s melody had once exposed a lie because the wrong woman knew it.

Now it belonged where Grace had always intended.

With Lily.

Victoria was gone.

The fraud was exposed.

The money had been traced.

Adrian had faced consequences.

Dante finally understood what Grace had been trying to protect before she died.

But whether Adrian would ever have a place in Lily’s life again was no longer a decision Dante intended to make for her.

That one choice would belong to Lily when she was old enough to understand what the letter meant.
