Chapter 12 - WHAT REBECCA FEARED IN ALEXANDER

Alexander did not believe her.

Victoria expected that.

She went upstairs.

Returned with a sealed envelope.

Rebecca’s handwriting.

ALEXANDER — ONLY IF YOU START BECOMING YOUR FATHER.

He stared.

“Where did you get this?”

“Rebecca gave it to me.”

“Why you?”

“Because she knew I was the only person arrogant enough to use it against you.”

Alexander almost laughed.

Rebecca.

Exactly.

He opened it.

The letter was short.

No accusation of violence.

No secret betrayal.

Something more difficult.

Rebecca worried Alexander believed being different from Edmund meant he had already escaped him.

He had not.

Edmund controlled through fear.

Alexander controlled through competence.

He decided quickly.

Protected aggressively.

Solved problems before other people finished explaining what they needed.

He loved Sophia deeply.

Rebecca feared that after losing her, Alexander might begin making every decision for their daughter and call it protection.

“If I die,” Rebecca wrote, “do not make Sophia’s whole life a monument to your fear of losing her too.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

Victoria watched.

Rebecca continued.

Let her have people you do not choose.

Let her disagree.

Let her be ordinary.

Let her love relatives who have disappointed you if she wants to.

And if someone hurts her, protect her without teaching her revenge is the same as safety.

Alexander folded the letter.

Victoria said nothing.

He looked at her.

“Why didn’t you give this to me?”

She laughed bitterly.

“Because when you were shot, I thought Rebecca was wrong.”

Alexander waited.

“I thought the family needed stronger control.”

There it was.

Again.

Victoria used Rebecca’s warning as evidence Rebecca had underestimated the danger.

So she did the opposite.

She tightened the house.

Removed Elizabeth.

Closed the west wing.

Controlled Sophia’s food.

Controlled her clothing.

Controlled her grief.

She transformed fear into discipline.

Then Alexander returned.

And found his daughter beside a trash cart.

Victoria looked toward the floor.

“I became exactly what Rebecca warned you about.”

Alexander answered quietly.

“No.”

She looked up.

“You became what she warned both of us about.”

That mattered.

Alexander had already imagined firing every staff member who failed Sophia.

Removing every relative who stayed silent.

Making the whole family pay.

The instinct felt righteous.

Rebecca’s letter forced him to examine it.

Not everyone deserved the same consequence.

Some staff were afraid.

Some looked away.

Some tried helping.

Julian secretly brought food.

Elizabeth was removed for objecting.

Daniel had not known.

Marcus knew too much and did too little.

Victoria caused the abuse directly.

Raymond caused Rebecca’s death and Alexander’s ambush.

Different truths.

Different responses.

That evening Alexander gathered the household.

Not the entire family.

Staff first.

He told them Sophia would not return until she wanted to.

He told them nobody would lose a job simply for admitting what they saw.

Then people started speaking.

A cook said she had slipped Sophia pastries twice.

A maid admitted Victoria caught her and threatened dismissal.

A driver said he heard Sophia asking when Daddy came home.

He believed Victoria when she said Alexander had died.

Each story added detail.

Then one young server spoke.

“Sir.”

Alexander turned.

“Mrs. Sterling had us prepare meals for Sophia every day.”

Alexander frowned.

“But she didn’t eat them.”

“No.”

“Where did they go?”

The server looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Sterling took them to the old carriage house.”

Victoria froze.

Alexander noticed.

“What is in the carriage house?”

Nobody answered.

Alexander turned toward his mother.

Her face had gone pale.

Then Sophia’s voice came from the doorway.

She had arrived with Elizabeth.

“Boy.”

Alexander looked down.

“What boy?”

Sophia pointed outside.

“Grandma feed sad boy.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Alexander stared.

May you like

There was someone else living on the estate.

Someone Victoria had been feeding while allowing Sophia to eat scraps.
