Chapter 9

The wedding ended without anyone announcing it.
No vows.
No music.
No cake.
Guests simply understood there would be no marriage after Adrian removed his boutonnière and set it on the table.
Marcella watched him.
“You’re leaving me?”
Adrian laughed once.
“You built this on a dead woman’s silence.”
She stared.
“You knew.”
“Not all of it.”
Interesting.
Even conspirators have lines they pretend matter.
Adrian admitted he knew Elena had been frightened. He knew Marcella’s pressure campaign. He did not know Thomas struck her car or that Marcella ordered him to stop Elena from reaching me.
Marcella looked at him with contempt.
“Coward.”
He answered:
“Yes.”
Then he walked away under guard.
Not free.
Just removed from the room.
I turned toward the four White Table men.
One tried to explain.
I stopped him.
“No speeches.”
They had heard enough speeches from themselves for decades.
I asked one question.
“Did you know Marcella intended to use Vivia?”
Two said no.
One refused to answer.
The fourth said yes.
I removed their pins.
No dramatic violence.
No blood across Marcella’s wedding floor.
Only authority disappearing piece by piece.
That frightened them more.
Marcella watched.
“You’re destroying Father’s family.”
I looked at Vivia.
“No.”
Then at her.
“I’m deciding which parts deserve to survive.”
She laughed through tears.
“You think Elena would approve of this?”
I looked at the USB.
“I’m about to find out.”
The last folder remained.
IF I DON’T COME HOME.
I opened it.
Elena sat outside in our garden.
Sunlight.
Vivia was an infant somewhere off-screen.
My wife looked directly into the camera.
“Nico, if I’m dead when you see this, do not make Vivia inherit our anger.”
I stopped breathing.
Marcella did too.
Elena continued.
“Tell her the truth. But don’t hand her a list of people she is required to hate.”
I looked at my daughter.
Elena had hidden evidence.
But she had also hidden instructions for what not to do with it.
That was harder.
Revenge would have been simple.

My wife had left me something more demanding.
Responsibility.
