Chapter 15

My father’s watch was restored by an independent craftsman Celia chose.

Important.

Not hidden.

No transmitter.

No modified backing.

Original mechanism only.

When it returned, I did not wear it.

Not yet.

I placed it beside the photograph.

Then forgot about it for months.

That was healthy.

Objects do not deserve permanent emotional command.

Eventually Beatrix found it.

“Daddy watch?”

“Yes.”

“Pretty.”

“It was Grandpa’s.”

She looked impressed for exactly three seconds.

Then asked for juice.

Perfect.

One day she wanted to wear it.

Too large.

I let her hold it.

Celia happened to be nearby.

She froze briefly.

Then smiled.

Healing rarely announces itself.

Beatrix handed it back.

“No fit.”

Correct.

I finally wore it at dinner a year after the engagement reception.

Nothing happened.

No warmth.

No hidden voice.

No Cross strategy.

Just a watch telling time.

Vivienne noticed from across the table.

We had begun attending some events together again.

She looked at my wrist.

Then at me.

May you like

Good.

Some symbols do not need speeches.
