Chapter 14

Nobody spoke for several seconds after Margaret’s recording ended.
Then Melissa laughed.
Small.
Bitter.
“Well.”
Everyone looked at her.
She folded her arms.
“Beautiful family moment.”
Valentina stared.
Melissa continued.
“Can we stop pretending Walter is some innocent saint now?”
Walter looked at her.
She smiled.
“He let Brian become this.”
Brian’s face hardened.
Melissa went on.
“He let Valentina take everything.”
“He let an old man live in a house where nobody wanted him.”
Walter’s jaw tightened.
Then she delivered what she believed was the final cut.
“Maybe the dog ate better because it contributed more.”
Silence.
Brian looked at her.
“Stop.”
She turned.
“What?”
“Stop talking about him like that.”
Melissa laughed.
“Now you care?”
Brian’s face tightened.
“No.”
Then:
“Now I hear it.”
Her smile faded.
He continued.
“Every time you hurt someone, you explain why they deserved it.”
Melissa stared.
Brian pointed toward Walter.
“He didn’t deserve that.”
Walter said nothing.
Brian swallowed.
“I did it anyway.”
Then to Melissa:
“You filmed it.”
“Yes.”
“You laughed.”
“Yes.”
“You pushed me further.”
Her face hardened.
“Don’t blame me.”
Brian shook his head.
“I’m not.”
That confused her.
“I’m blaming both of us.”
Silence.
Melissa took one step backward.
Responsibility again.
No escape hatch.
Valentina looked toward Peter.
“You leave.”
He scoffed.
“With what?”
“Your clothes.”
“Your cane.”
“Nothing Hartwell.”
Peter stared.
“You cannot exile history.”
Valentina answered:
“No.”
“But I can stop inviting it to dinner.”
Thomas stepped beside him.
Peter looked at Walter.
“You’ll regret this.”
Walter smiled.
“At seventy?”
Then:
“I’m running out of time for regrets.”
Peter’s face darkened.
He left.
Victor followed.
Not because they were forgiven.
Because their access was over.
Melissa looked toward Valentina.
“And me?”
Valentina said:
“You leave with Brian.”
Brian turned.
“No.”
Melissa stared.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
Her face changed.
“Brian.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“You need me.”
He almost laughed.
“That sentence worked yesterday.”
Melissa’s eyes hardened.
“You think your sister wants you?”
Valentina said nothing.
Melissa continued.
“Your father?”
She looked at Walter.
“He’ll never forgive you.”
Brian flinched.
She saw.
Pressed harder.
“You have nowhere.”
There it was.
Control through isolation.
Brian looked at Walter.
His father remained silent.
Good.
No rescue.
No instant absolution.
Brian looked at Valentina.
She remained silent too.
He finally understood.
He had to stand without anyone handing him safety.
He turned back to Melissa.
“Then I’ll start with nowhere.”
Her face collapsed.
The engagement ring on her hand suddenly looked ridiculous.
Valentina looked toward the doorway.
“Melissa.”
She raised her chin.
“What?”
“You said Dad lived here for free.”
Melissa’s mouth tightened.
Valentina continued.
“This house was his before it was Brian’s.”
Silence.
“And tomorrow…”
She smiled faintly.
“…you won’t even have dog food to eat here.”
Walter almost laughed.
Melissa didn’t.
She looked around the room.
The house she had treated as proof of power.
Gone.
Not because of paperwork.
Because nobody inside wanted her there anymore.
She removed the ring.
Threw it at Brian.
Then walked out.
No one stopped her.
The front door closed.
Walter looked toward his son.
Brian stood alone.
Exactly as Melissa had threatened.
Valentina waited.
Brian finally whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Walter looked at him.
Then at the dining room.
The kibble still scattered under the table.
His voice was quiet.
“Not tonight.”
May you like
Brian nodded.
That was all he deserved.
