Chapter 11 - THE THIRD BROTHER

Elias Vale disappeared before Lorenzo reached the balcony.
Not because Lorenzo was slow.
Because Elias had designed the building’s exits better than the DeLucas who owned it.
By the time the shooting ended, three men were wounded.
Nobody important was dead.
That irritated Lorenzo.
He wanted one clean enemy.
Instead he had another ghost.
Gabriel survived the shot.
Barely.
Sarah reached Noah first after the fighting stopped.
She dropped beside him.
Noah clung to both parents.
For perhaps twenty seconds, Lorenzo and Sarah held the boy together.
No mafia.
No conspiracy.
No dead fathers.
Just three people trying to make sure a child understood he was safe.
Then Gabriel laughed weakly from the floor.
“Antonio would hate this.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“What?”
“All of us choosing the child before the war.”
Lorenzo did not smile.
But the words remained.
They brought Gabriel back to the estate.
Not a hospital.
A trusted doctor treated the wound in a private room.
The bullet passed through.
Painful.
Not immediately fatal.
Margaret arrived.
She saw Gabriel alive.
For a moment the sixty-six-year-old mafia matriarch disappeared.
A sister stood in her place.
She slapped him.
Then held his face with both hands.
“You bastard.”
Gabriel smiled weakly.
“Missed you too.”
She began crying.
Lorenzo left them to it.
He found Adrian downstairs.
Adrian had heard the name.
Elias Vale.
“No.”
Lorenzo leaned against the desk.
“That word is getting popular.”
“My father had one brother.”
“Malcolm.”
“Yes.”
“Apparently he had another.”
“He would have told me.”
“Your father told you Malcolm was dead.”
Adrian stopped.
Lorenzo continued.
“Maybe lies were the only inheritance Victor gave honestly.”
Malcolm arrived an hour later.
Nobody invited him.
He came because Adrian sent a message.
When Lorenzo said Elias, Malcolm sat down.
The old man looked genuinely shaken.
“He survived.”
“You know him.”
“My youngest brother.”
Adrian stared.
“You told me there were only two of you.”
Malcolm looked at him.
“Because Elias was dead to us long before Victor told the world I was.”
“Why?”
Malcolm leaned on his cane.
“Because he liked the Circle.”
Lorenzo waited.
“Victor used it.”
“I tried to leave it.”
“Elias worshiped it.”
Malcolm described him.
Elias believed families were unstable because leaders loved too deeply.
Wives.
Children.
Brothers.
Friends.
Love created unpredictability.
The Circle’s purpose, in his mind, was to make loyalty serve order rather than affection.
“He said people should fear the structure more than they loved each other.”
Sarah stood near the doorway.
“That sounds like Antonio.”
Malcolm looked at her.
“Antonio respected Elias.”
Lorenzo’s expression darkened.
“Too much.”
Gabriel, pale but conscious, entered with Margaret helping him.
“Elias became Antonio’s shadow.”
Malcolm nodded.
Then Gabriel added:
“And after Antonio died, Elias believed he should inherit the Circle.”
“Margaret did instead.”
“Yes.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“You knew Thomas was Elias?”
Margaret shook her head violently.
“No.”
“Twelve years.”
“I hired Thomas Creed twelve years ago.”
Malcolm frowned.
“Was that his real name?”
Margaret looked toward Gabriel.
“No.”
They found the answer through memory, not paperwork.
Twelve years ago, Margaret’s original driver had become ill.
A quiet man named Thomas Creed was recommended by a DeLuca associate.
Nobody remembered who.
He worked flawlessly.
Never drank.
Never gossiped.
Never took vacation.
Margaret mistook invisibility for loyalty.
Elias had embedded himself before Antonio even died.
Long before Lorenzo vanished.
Long before Noah was born.
“He heard everything,” Margaret whispered.
“Yes,” Lorenzo said.
“Circle meetings.”
“Yes.”
“My calls.”
“Yes.”
“Sarah.”
Lorenzo’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at Malcolm.
“Why would he take Lorenzo?”
Malcolm answered.
“Because Lorenzo was supposed to become the next Antonio.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“I never wanted the Circle.”
“You didn’t know it existed.”
“Exactly.”
“Elias believed ignorance could be corrected.”
Gabriel whispered:
“He wanted to break Lorenzo first.”
Three years underground.
Isolation.
Questions.
No identity.
No family.
No time.
Not simply to find the Black Bell.
To strip Lorenzo down until he became someone Elias could reshape.
Lorenzo felt sick.
“What stopped him?”
Gabriel looked toward Sarah.
“Probably her.”
Sarah frowned.
“How?”
“Lorenzo kept refusing.”
Malcolm smiled faintly.
“Men like Elias understand fear. Pain. Ambition.”
He looked at Sarah.
“They never understand why a man refuses power because he wants to go home.”
Lorenzo looked away.
That sentence cut deeper than he expected.
Adrian was quiet for a long moment.
Then:
“Why was I pushed toward Sarah?”
Malcolm looked at him.
“Elias wanted both outcomes controlled.”
“If Lorenzo broke?”
“He returned as the Circle’s man.”
“And if he didn’t?”
“Lorenzo disappeared permanently. You married Sarah. Noah grew under Vale influence.”
Adrian stood.
“So I was the replacement.”
“Yes.”
His face became cold.
Not because he loved Lorenzo.
Because he finally understood his own life had been planned by men who considered his desires irrelevant.
Sarah looked at Adrian.
He met her eyes.
“I did care about you.”
She held his gaze.
“I know.”
That surprised Lorenzo.
Sarah continued.
“That is what makes the lies worse.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
No forgiveness.
No dramatic hatred.
Just consequence.
Lorenzo looked at Malcolm.
“Where does Elias go?”
Malcolm shook his head.
“He doesn’t run to houses.”
“Then what?”
“He goes where the Circle can still reach him.”
“What remains?”
Gabriel answered.
“The dinner.”
Lorenzo looked toward him.
“What dinner?”
Margaret whispered:
“The Founders’ Table.”
Once every ten years, old families met in secret.
No weapons at the table.
No bodyguards inside.
No arguments carried outside.
The next meeting was not years away.
It was tomorrow night.
And Margaret had received the invitation months ago.
She had planned not to attend.
Now Lorenzo understood why Elias revealed himself.
He was not fleeing.
May you like
He was moving toward the one room where the surviving power of the old families would be gathered together.
Elias was about to decide who inherited the Circle.
