Chapter 9 - THE EMPTY NURSERY

The estate gates were open.

That was wrong.

The guards were alive.

That was almost worse.

Three men lay unconscious near the security station.

No gunfire.

No blood.

Whoever entered had known exactly how to avoid noise.

Lorenzo ran upstairs.

Sarah reached Noah’s room first.

Empty.

The small bed was untouched.

The stuffed bear lay on the floor.

“Noah!”

Her scream moved through the house.

Lorenzo’s body turned cold.

Not panic.

Something beyond panic.

The kind that makes violence feel clean.

He searched once.

Closet.

Bathroom.

Balcony.

Nothing.

On the bed rested the old signet ring.

Sarah stared.

“I kept that in my jewelry box.”

The ring had been taken from her room.

Then placed in Noah’s.

Lorenzo picked it up.

The inner face had been opened.

The black coin was gone.

Someone had come for it.

And taken Noah.

Sarah turned toward Margaret.

“You.”

Margaret recoiled.

“No.”

“You knew about the ring.”

“I didn’t.”

“You knew Gabriel was alive.”

“I didn’t.”

“You knew everything else!”

Sarah lunged.

Lorenzo caught her.

“Sarah.”

“Let me go!”

“Not until we know.”

“They took my son!”

“Our son.”

The words stopped both of them.

Lorenzo held her shoulders.

“Our son.”

Sarah’s face broke.

For three years Noah had belonged only to her grief.

Now the father she believed dead was beside her.

It did not make the fear smaller.

But it meant she did not stand alone inside it.

Adrian entered behind them.

“What happened?”

Lorenzo turned.

Adrian saw the empty room.

His face changed.

“No.”

Sarah moved toward him.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“You knew about the Vales. The Circle. Your father.”

“I did not know about Gabriel.”

Lorenzo watched him.

Adrian looked genuinely horrified.

That did not make him innocent.

It made him useful.

Anthony entered holding one of the unconscious guards’ radios.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“One guard woke up.”

Lorenzo followed.

The man remembered almost nothing.

Someone in a DeLuca vehicle arrived.

Correct pass phrase.

Correct internal code.

The driver wore a cap.

Another man sat in back.

The guard opened the gate.

Then remembered a needle.

Darkness.

“What vehicle?” Lorenzo asked.

“Old sedan. East fleet.”

Anthony checked.

One car was missing.

Assigned to—

“Margaret.”

Everyone turned.

Margaret’s face emptied.

“I haven’t used it in weeks.”

“Who has the keys?”

“My driver.”

“Where is he?”

No answer.

They found the driver’s room empty.

His name was Thomas Creed.

He had served Margaret twelve years.

Another invisible man.

Another trusted door.

Lorenzo felt the pattern.

Gabriel did not need an army.

He needed old loyalties nobody questioned.

The phone rang.

Margaret’s.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Gabriel’s voice.

“Hello, sister.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Lorenzo took the phone.

“Where is my son?”

Gabriel laughed softly.

“My boy.”

Lorenzo had not heard that voice in five years.

Older.

Still warm.

Still capable of making betrayal sound like affection.

“You came home.”

“Where is Noah?”

“Safe.”

“If he cries—”

“He isn’t crying.”

Lorenzo’s voice turned lethal.

“Then you should pray he stays that way.”

Gabriel sighed.

“You always begin with threats.”

“You took my son.”

“I took the coin.”

“You took both.”

“Because you would have followed the coin.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel laughed.

“Exactly.”

Lorenzo understood.

Noah was bait.

Not leverage for a demand.

A trail.

“Where?”

“Saint Bernadette’s.”

Margaret whispered, “No.”

Gabriel heard.

“Hello, Maggie.”

Her face twisted.

“You bastard.”

“Still dramatic.”

“Why?”

“Because Antonio left a mess.”

“You voted to exile Lorenzo.”

“Yes.”

“You helped Victor.”

“Yes.”

“Then disappeared.”

“Yes.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

Gabriel’s voice lost its warmth.

“Because I finally understood what Antonio had built.”

Lorenzo said, “The Black Bell.”

“Yes.”

“You have the coin.”

“One piece.”

“What opens it?”

Gabriel paused.

“Come alone and I’ll show you.”

“No.”

“Then Noah waits.”

Sarah stepped toward the phone.

“Let me speak to him.”

Silence.

Gabriel asked:

“Sarah?”

“Yes.”

“Lorenzo chose well.”

“Put my son on.”

For the first time, Gabriel hesitated.

Then Noah’s small voice came through.

“Mommy?”

Sarah covered her mouth.

“I’m here, baby.”

“Daddy’s uncle gave me juice.”

Lorenzo’s face darkened.

Gabriel returned.

“He’s fine.”

Sarah whispered, “If you hurt him—”

“I won’t.”

Lorenzo took the phone.

“Saint Bernadette’s. One hour.”

“Alone.”

Lorenzo looked at Sarah.

She shook her head.

Adrian looked ready to object.

Margaret stared at the floor.

Lorenzo said:

“I’ll come.”

The call ended.

Sarah grabbed his arm.

“You are not going alone.”

“He has Noah.”

“And he expects the old Lorenzo.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“What?”

“The man who walks into traps because someone insulted his blood.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You disappeared that way once.”

That sentence stopped him.

Three years earlier, he had trusted anger more than caution.

Tonight, Noah could not afford the same mistake.

Lorenzo looked around the room.

Sarah.

Adrian.

Margaret.

Anthony.

People he did not fully trust.

People he had no choice but to use.

“Fine.”

His voice became calm.

“We give Gabriel exactly what he asked for.”

May you like

A pause.

“Then we make sure he never realizes how many of us came.”
