Chapter 14

Elena found a new job.
Daytime.
Hotel administration.
No night cleaning.
No child trailing through executive corridors.
Good.
She and Sophia moved into a small apartment fifteen minutes away.
I offered something larger.
She refused.
I did not repeat the offer.
Also good.
Sophia visited Titan twice a week.
Titan learned new routines.
No heavy leather leash.
No forced guarding drills.
No commands from Victor.
He became calmer.
So did I.
Not immediately.
The first week I woke twice expecting someone near my water glass.
I stopped drinking anything left unattended.
Dante noticed.
Said nothing.
One morning Sophia arrived and saw me pouring out a glass because I had forgotten when it was filled.
She frowned.
“Bad water?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
I hesitated.
“Because I’m nervous.”
Elena looked at me.
So did Dante.
I almost laughed.
Admitting fear in front of staff would have horrified my father.
Good.
Sophia thought.
Then poured a little from her juice bottle into an empty cup.
She pushed it toward me.
“Mine safe.”
My chest tightened.
I drank it.
Apple juice.
Too sweet.
She smiled.
Nothing healed instantly.
But my body remembered that moment later.
Trust rebuilt through small ridiculous things.
Victor heard about it somehow.
He sent a message through Carlo.
Tell Adrian I never touched his drinks before that day.
I believed him.
Mostly.
Did it help?
A little.
That annoyed me.
Truth from people who hurt us can still matter.
I did not answer.
Not yet.
Carlo worked under Dante without independent access.
He hated taking instructions from a younger man.
Useful humility.
The older capos stopped calling staff “background.”
Not because I made a rule.
Because Sophia’s story embarrassed them.

Sometimes shame has one productive use.
Only if it leads somewhere beyond itself.
