Chapter 17

Two years after Victor touched my drink, Sophia turned five.

Elena brought her to the estate for a small garden dinner.

Not a Mafia gala.

Her request.

Titan wore no leash.

He wandered between tables stealing attention and hoping for meat.

Sophia drew everyone.

Poorly.

Mercilessly.

Dante apparently had ears like doors.

Dr. Reynolds had no hair at all despite having plenty.

I looked like “angry triangle.”

Fair.

Victor had been invited.

By me.

Not restored.

Invited.

He arrived late.

Stopped when Titan saw him.

Everyone noticed.

Titan stood.

Victor did not move.

No command.

No hand extended.

Nothing.

The dog walked closer.

Sniffed him.

Then walked away.

Victor closed his eyes.

It was not forgiveness.

It was not rejection.

It was simply the dog choosing.

Sophia watched.

Then returned to her notebook.

Victor sat at the far end of the table.

No rank.

No pin.

No security access.

Family, conditionally.

That was enough for one day.

After dinner, Sophia came into my study.

Same desk.

Same cabinet.

No broken glass.

She placed a drawing in front of me.

Titan beside her.

Me behind the desk.

Victor outside the doorway.

“What’s this?”

She pointed.

“Before.”

Then another drawing.

Same people.

But now the door was open.

Victor still outside.

Not erased.

Not inside.

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

She shrugged.

“He can come later.”

Children understand boundaries better than adults when nobody teaches them that love requires immediate access.

I folded the second drawing carefully.

She stopped me.

“No.”

I froze.

She took it back.

Right.

Hers.

Then she handed me the first one.

“For you.”

Choice again.

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

Titan rested his head against Sophia’s knee.

She scratched behind his ears.

Two years earlier, every trained adult in this house backed away from him.

The smallest person walked closer.

Not because she was fearless.

Because she did not see a weapon.

She saw a frightened dog standing over a hurt man.

Victor saw Titan as control.

Carlo saw Sophia as staff.

The old capos saw compassion as weakness.

All of them missed what mattered because power had taught them to look only for hierarchy.

Sophia closed her notebook.

“Home now.”

Elena waited at the doorway.

I nodded.

“See you next week?”

Sophia looked at Titan.

“Maybe.”

I laughed.

Her choice.

Always.

After they left, I sat alone behind the desk where Victor once planned my collapse.

Titan slept beneath it.

No leash.

No command.

No one guarding the door.

And I finally understood what my dog knew before I did.

Danger does not always come from the person strong enough to attack you.

Sometimes it comes from the person who needs your trust so badly that, once trust is no longer enough, they decide to manufacture your dependence instead.
