Chapter 13

Marcus broke before Lucinda did.
Not emotionally.
Practically.
The restoration investigation expanded.
His own attorney advised him that protecting Lucinda was no longer protecting himself.
Marcus returned for another recorded interview.
This time he stopped minimizing.
He admitted Lucinda gave Elena the liquid.
He admitted seeing her become disoriented.
He admitted moving staff away from the service corridor.
And he admitted something nobody had known.
After Elena fell, Marcus found the small bottle in Lucinda’s purse.
He removed it before emergency responders arrived.
Andrew stared at him.
“Where is it?”
“Gone.”
“What did you do with it?”
Marcus looked at his attorney.
Then answered.
“I got rid of it.”
Andrew's hands curled against the table.
Rachel glanced toward him.
He stayed seated.
Marcus seemed almost disappointed.
Months earlier Andrew would have crossed the table.
Marcus knew it.
Perhaps he had been counting on it.
Andrew said only:
“You let me bury my wife believing she fell because she was tired.”
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.”
“You watched Alex stop speaking.”
“Yes.”
“You came into my house every week.”
Marcus’s voice cracked.
“I didn't know what to do.”
Andrew stared at him.
“Every day you stayed silent was something you chose to do.”
Medical experts reviewed Elena’s records again with the new information.
They could not honestly say the sedative alone killed her.
The fatal injury came from the fall.
But they concluded the substance could have significantly impaired alertness, coordination, and balance.
That was enough to change how everyone understood the night.
Not enough to turn the case into a neat television ending.
Rachel explained it to Andrew.
“There will be arguments about causation. There will be arguments about intent. Lucinda will say she never intended serious harm. Marcus will say he did not administer anything.”
Andrew nodded.
He no longer needed simple villains.
Reality had become uglier.
Lucinda had tried to control Elena.
Marcus had helped.
Neither expected her death.
Then they covered up what they had done because telling the truth would destroy them.
Elena paid for the first decision.
Alex paid for the second.
Andrew had contributed something different.
He had created the kind of family where Lucinda believed she had authority over his marriage and Marcus believed hiding the truth was safer than telling him.

That did not make Andrew responsible for Elena’s fall.
But it made him responsible for deciding what kind of family remained afterward.
