Chapter 14

The Caruso family gathered one final time in the radio archive.
Not for revenge.
Not for a secret tribunal.
Attorneys were present.
Foundation board members were present.
The doors were open.
Andrew wanted no misunderstanding about what was happening.
Lucinda sat at one end of the long donor table.
Marcus sat several chairs away.
Alex was not there.
Andrew had deliberately left him with Megan.
No three-year-old needed to watch adults account for what they had done to his mother.
Andrew placed three things on the table.
The medical review.
Marcus’s statement.
Elena’s recovered recording.
Lucinda looked at the recorder.
“Are you going to play that for everyone?”
“No.”
Andrew switched it off.
“That belonged to my wife. The people who need it will receive it. Nobody else gets to turn her fear into entertainment.”
Lucinda looked down.
Andrew announced that she was permanently removed from every Caruso Foundation position.
Marcus had already resigned.
The foundation would pursue recovery of improperly obtained benefits connected to the restoration contracts.
Both were prohibited from contact with Alex unless a future legal arrangement and Andrew, with professional guidance, determined otherwise.
Then Andrew addressed his own actions at the charity broadcast.
“I hit Marcus.”
Marcus looked up.
“I struck Lucinda.”
Lucinda said nothing.
Andrew continued.
“They were reaching for my son. I was furious. That explains what happened. It does not make every part of what I did acceptable.”
His attorney had already provided the relevant footage and witness statements to authorities handling the complaints.
Andrew would not use the family to bury them.
Lucinda stared at him as though she no longer recognized him.
“You’re going to let outsiders judge this family?”
Andrew looked at her.
“That sentence is why Elena was afraid.”
Lucinda flinched.
Marcus leaned back.
For decades the Carusos had survived by deciding privately who was right, who was wrong, who owed what, and what truth outsiders were allowed to hear.
Andrew was ending that rule.
Not because he suddenly trusted every institution.
Because he no longer trusted power without accountability inside his own house.
Lucinda stood.
“You are destroying what your father built.”
Andrew thought about Elena’s recording.
You can come with us if you choose a different life.
He had received the choice eight months too late.
“No.”
May you like
Andrew opened the archive doors.
“I’m deciding what my son inherits from it.”
