Chapter 6

Benedict kept an archive.

Not financial.

Not criminal.

Memory.

I found it in one of his old rooms at the Waverly estate.

Boxes labeled by dead family members.

Clothes.

Letters.

Recorded voices.

Childhood drawings.

Favorite perfumes.

Recipes.

Photographs.

At first, it looked tender.

Then I found the files.

EMILY — CONTINUITY.

I sat down.

Inside were notes about June.

Height.

Speech patterns.

Favorite foods.

How quickly she responded to “Emily.”

Then Lila.

Then Sophie.

Then Ottilie.

My granddaughter had a file before Isadora ever dressed her.

Benedict had been planning resemblance.

Not kidnapping.

Not replacement officially.

Something he called “continuity therapy.”

I hated the phrase.

He believed bereaved relatives could process grief through temporary reenactment with consenting families.

Except children cannot consent to becoming dead people.

And some families consented because they needed money.

Not therapy.

Power.

The notes grew stranger.

“Subject resists original name suppression.”

“Attachment to biological identity remains strong.”

“Mother figure reports relief during compliance periods.”

Clinical language written by a man with no clinical training.

My brother.

I closed my eyes.

Benedict had not merely covered up Isadora’s behavior.

He had intellectualized it.

Built a philosophy around it.

He believed identity could be borrowed safely if everyone understood it was temporary.

Everyone except the child.

Then I found a final note.

OTTILIE MAY BE IDEAL DUE TO INTERNAL FAMILY STATUS. LESS EXTERNAL INTERRUPTION.

My hands clenched.

That was the line.

He knew outside parents were the obstacle.

So family children were easier.

I called for every box to be sealed and brought upstairs.

Not destroyed.

Not yet.

Truth first.

Then my bodyguard brought something else.

A photograph.

Benedict standing beside Isadora.

Rupert.

And a young girl I did not recognize.

Seven years old perhaps.

Older than Emily when she died.

The date was only four months ago.

After Benedict’s death.

Meaning his “continuity” project had outlived him.

I looked at Rupert.

“Who is she?”

He whispered:

“Clara.”

Another girl.

Not younger.

May you like

Older.

The pattern had changed again.
