Chapter 8

I found Denise and Clara the next morning.

They lived forty minutes away in a small rental.

No guards.

No spectacle.

I went alone except for one man outside.

Denise opened the door and nearly shut it when she saw me.

Fair.

“I’m not here to bring Clara anywhere.”

She stared.

“Good.”

I asked if we could talk.

Inside, Clara sat at the kitchen table drawing.

She looked at me once.

Then ignored me.

Healthy skepticism.

Denise told me Rupert had paid for her husband’s funeral.

Then school fees.

Then helped with rent.

Generosity became relationship.

Relationship became expectation.

When he asked whether Clara could spend weekends with Isadora, Denise agreed.

She thought grief companionship.

The first visit was normal.

Second, dress.

Third, pendant.

Fourth, name.

Clara refused immediately.

Seven-year-olds have stronger language than three-year-olds.

She told Isadora:

“I’m not your dead kid.”

Blunt.

Accurate.

Isadora slapped the table beside her.

Not Clara.

Still frightening.

Clara called her mother.

Denise picked her up.

Within a month, her event work vanished.

No explanation.

Rupert denied retaliation.

But every booking route passed through Hawthorne.

Result mattered.

I apologized.

Not for Rupert’s actions as though they were mine.

For the system that allowed someone under Waverly influence to quietly remove a widow’s livelihood without review.

Denise stared at me.

“Apology pay rent?”

Fair.

I restored the lost contracts only if she wanted them.

She did not.

Also fair.

So I offered compensation for already cancelled work.

No conditions.

She accepted after making me repeat:

“No family obligation.”

Good.

Clara finally looked up.

“Is Ottilie okay?”

I smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

“She wore the dress?”

“Yes.”

Clara made a face.

“Hated that dress.”

Children.

Direct.

Then she asked:

“Did they call her Emily?”

“Yes.”

She looked angry.

“Tell her she’s Ottilie.”

“I did.”

“Again.”

I nodded.

“I will.”

Clara returned to drawing.

Simple instruction.

Better than every adult theory in Benedict’s archive.
