Chapter 15

The gala returned.

Different hotel.

Different organizer.

Rose.

I almost refused the entire concept.

She convinced me.

“Children’s homes still need money, Gabriel.”

Fair.

This time the event raised funds for multiple homes.

Not just St. Catherine’s.

No giant portrait of me.

Excellent.

Martha attended in the same worn formal dress.

I offered to buy her another.

She threatened me with a spoon.

She brought bread again.

This time it went directly to the head table.

Not because it belonged there more than other food.

Because I wanted some.

Eli attended with a group of older children who wanted to.

Not displayed.

Not paraded.

They ate at ordinary tables.

I noticed one donor trying to photograph them without asking.

Rose stopped him.

Good.

At dinner, Martha leaned toward me.

“The children ate lunch.”

I smiled.

“High standards.”

“Breakfast too.”

“Revolutionary.”

She kicked my shoe.

Then the new director gave me the pantry report.

I did not ask for it.

Still, I checked.

Food.

Heat.

Staffing.

Boring numbers.

I had finally learned that charity becomes real in boring details.

Not chandeliers.

Not speeches.

Not headlines.

A pantry full on Tuesday matters more than a pledge on Saturday.

Halfway through dinner, a server placed Serena’s donation card near Rose.

Anonymous.

Rose knew anyway.

She looked at me.

I shrugged.

Serena’s choice.

My approval unnecessary.

That was progress for both of us.

Then Martha placed a slice of bread on my plate.

“Eat.”

May you like

“Yes, ma’am.”

Some hierarchies deserve preservation.
