Chapter 16

I visited Margaret’s grave for the first time at forty-five.

Not because I finally became ready.

Because there may be no such thing.

Gideon gave me the location.

Small cemetery outside Milwaukee.

VALE engraved on the stone.

MARGARET ELAINE.

Twenty-two.

No mention of child.

I brought nothing.

Flowers felt like performing grief for a woman I never knew.

So I sat.

Talked?

A little.

Mostly silence.

I told her I had been fed.

That seemed important.

I told her Father Mercer gave me his name.

That Martha still bullied me.

That the home survived.

That twenty-four children currently lived there and Eli Dawson could probably break into a bank if given enough keys.

I told her Serena had burned the letter.

Then:

“I know what it said anyway.”

Not every word.

Enough.

You loved me.

You came back.

They stopped you.

Those facts could not return childhood.

But they changed one old lie.

I had never been abandoned by everyone.

That mattered.

Then Gideon arrived.

I had not invited him.

He stayed fifty feet away until I nodded.

Good.

He sat.

“She would have liked you.”

I almost laughed.

“You don’t know that.”

He smiled sadly.

“No.”

Better.

Then:

“She would have argued with you.”

“That I believe.”

We sat until sunset.

No reconciliation with the Vale family.

No new surname.

I remained Gabriel Mercer.

Name chosen by the man who raised me.

Blood did not require rebranding.

Before leaving, Gideon asked:

“Do you hate us?”

I thought.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“I hate what some of you did.”

Different.

Families become dangerous when guilt is inherited as lazily as power.

Serena was responsible for Serena.

Gideon for Gideon.

Vincent for a history he was no longer alive to answer for.

May you like

And I was responsible for what I built from the truth.

That was enough weight.
