Chapter 11

Rose was not abroad.
The video calls had been staged from a private estate in the same state.
Tristan discovered that by checking background details he had ignored because he trusted his wife.
Same window.
Same garden statue.
Same wall molding as one of Vivienne’s unused properties.
He looked destroyed.
Good.
Not because I wanted him in pain.
Because he finally understood what Elena had lived through.
“What did Camille tell you?”
“That Rose was safer away from Morelli tension.”
“And you agreed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His answer came quietly.
“Because my mother said good fathers make hard choices.”
Elena looked at him.
There was no sympathy in her face.
Only recognition.
Vivienne used the same language every time.
Hard choice.
Family first.
Protection.
Words that sounded noble enough to hide who lost agency.
We found the estate before sunset.
Camille was there.
Rose was too.
So was Victor Morelli.
Alive.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Watching from the terrace as if he had been expecting us.
Tristan ran toward his daughter.
Rose hesitated.
That hurt him.
She had not seen him in six months.
He stopped himself before forcing the reunion.
“Rose.”
She stared.
“Daddy?”
He nodded.
Camille stepped between them.
“She doesn’t need this chaos.”
Elena laughed softly behind me.
I knew that laugh now.
The laugh of a mother hearing another adult justify separation as protection.
Tristan looked at his wife.
“You lied to me.”
Camille folded her arms.
“You chose your mother over us years ago. I chose the version where Rose was safe.”
“Safe from who?”
“You.”
That stopped him.
Maybe Camille was manipulative.
Maybe she also had a point.
Both could be true.
Victor finally spoke.
“Vivienne is gone.”
I looked at him.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why are you here?”
“To end what she started.”
I almost smiled.
“You monitored my son.”
“Yes.”
“You helped keep him from me.”
“Yes.”
“No excuse?”
“No.”
Interesting.
He looked at the children.
“Vivienne built power by deciding which family members deserved access to one another. She did it to Matteo. Elena. Nico. Rose. Eventually she would have done it to Isla too.”
I stared at him.
“And you helped.”
“For years.”
“Why stop?”
Victor looked tired.
“Because she asked me to move Rose again.”
Tristan stepped forward.
“Where?”
Victor met his eyes.
“Somewhere you would never find her.”
That was his line.
The one he finally refused to cross.
May you like
Too late to be innocent.
Early enough to matter.
