Chapter 16

I changed the Morelli inner structure over the next month.

Quietly.

No grand purge.

No theatrical punishments.

Men were judged for what they actually did.

Tristan lost senior command.

He accepted it.

Victor lost private security authority.

He accepted that too.

Matteo remained outside leadership by his own choice.

Camille moved with Rose into separate family housing while she and Tristan decided whether anything remained between them besides shared regret.

Vivienne lost access.

Not food.

Not comfort.

Not dignity.

Access.

To captains.

To children.

To decisions.

That distinction mattered.

I would not become her to defeat her.

Elena stayed at the estate temporarily with Isla and Nico.

Separate wing.

Her choice.

I never asked when temporary would change.

Some nights we spoke for hours.

Some nights she closed her door after dinner.

Both were allowed.

That was new for us too.

One morning, Nico appeared in my study wearing one shoe.

“Lost.”

“What?”

“My other one.”

We searched together.

He found it under the couch.

He looked proud enough to have recovered a stolen kingdom.

Isla came in next, holding the smartwatch.

“Daddy?”

I still felt that word physically.

“Yes?”

She held up the watch.

“Bad voice gone.”

Elena had deleted Vivienne’s recording.

I looked at the screen.

“Good.”

Isla frowned.

“Should we keep it so we remember?”

I thought about that.

Then shook my head.

“You don’t need her voice to remember the truth.”

She accepted that.

Then she tapped the watch.

“What time?”

“Breakfast.”

Her face lit up.

Nico ran ahead of her.

I followed.

At the table, they argued over strawberries.

Ordinary.

Beautifully ordinary.

Elena came in last.

She stood in the doorway watching us.

I looked at her.

“What?”

She smiled faintly.

“Nothing.”

But it wasn’t nothing.

Three years earlier, Vivienne had built a future where these four people never sat in one room together.

Now breakfast itself was rebellion.

No secret heir.

No abandoned mother.

No rejected daughter.

May you like

No dead son.

Just a family trying to learn what was real after living inside someone else’s story.
