Chapter 13

Elias did not return to lodge work.

His choice.

He stayed with Nerelle for two weeks.

Then rented a small place nearby.

No Wynthorne protection forced on him.

No job offered as compensation.

That matters.

Powerful men often try repairing harm by making the harmed person dependent on them.

Easy mistake.

I paid only what my household actually owed for the months Nerelle lost to retaliatory schedule cuts Rosamonde had imposed.

Nerelle argued.

I showed her the calculations.

She accepted.

Not charity.

Wages corrected.

Elias asked for nothing.

Then, one afternoon, he requested a meeting.

Directly.

He got it.

No Merrick.

No steward.

No engagement fiancée.

Just him.

He told me something I had not known.

The night before disappearing, he had tried calling my office.

Reached an assistant.

Said:

“Someone is selling Mr. Wynthorne’s name.”

The assistant asked:

“Do you have an appointment?”

Elias hung up.

I stared.

“That happened?”

“Yes.”

“Name?”

He told me.

The assistant still worked for me.

Not corrupt.

Just trained.

Filter.

Protect time.

Reduce noise.

Every system has a phrase that sounds reasonable until the wrong person hears it at the wrong moment.

Do you have an appointment?

Elias laughed without humor.

“I figured men like me don’t get appointments with men like you.”

“That was the problem.”

I changed the rule.

Not open door chaos.

A protected escalation path.

Any employee or contractor reporting misuse of my name, threats to family, or coercion by someone claiming my authority could reach security review immediately.

Boring.

Necessary.

Merrick had profited because I was difficult to reach.

Rosamonde had panicked because telling me felt catastrophic.

Elias had disappeared because he believed silence safer than escalation.

Different people.

Same distance.

I could not become available to everyone all the time.

But I could stop making access itself a private commodity.

That lesson cost Elias six months.

I intended not to pay for it twice.
