Chapter 15

Winter ended.

The lodge reopened in spring.

The coat-check counter remained.

Nerelle returned to work there by choice.

Not because she lacked other options.

She had been offered transfer.

Declined.

“I like the lodge.”

Fair.

The first time I saw her behind the counter again, the old overcoat hung beside her.

Clean.

Mostly.

A faint red shadow remained near the hem.

“Why keep it?”

She looked at me.

“Elias still hasn’t earned it back.”

I smiled.

Fair.

Then she showed me the cuff.

The hand-sewn patch remained.

But now another stitch ran beside it.

Cleaner.

Straighter.

Elias repaired the repair.

Sibling insult through tailoring.

Good.

He had taken work with a mountain transport company in another county.

Nothing tied to me.

He visited Nerelle every Sunday.

She complained every Monday.

Normal.

That was the victory.

Not grand justice.

Ordinary irritation replacing terror.

Conrad, my steward, also changed.

He booked fifteen-minute meetings with me now.

Actual calendar slots.

The first time, he walked in and said:

“This feels ridiculous.”

“It cost you a favor last time.”

He stopped complaining.

Rafe created one phrase for emergency escalation:

Direct concern.

Anyone using it bypassed ordinary filtering.

Simple.

No secret password mystique.

Just recognition that some messages cannot wait behind politeness.

I had spent years controlling who reached me because too much access creates vulnerability.

Still true.

But too little creates brokers.

May you like

Merrick taught me that accidentally.

I hated owing him even that lesson.
