Chapter 10

The hidden passage remained sealed for months.

Not symbolically.

Construction issue.

The old panel mechanism was dangerous.

I had engineers inspect it.

They recommended removing the locking latch completely.

We did.

No ceremony.

The concealed recess contained nothing valuable once the tin came out.

Dust.

Old hooks.

Broken shelving.

I ordered it cleaned and structurally stabilized.

Then left it empty.

Rafe asked:

“What are we doing with it?”

“Nothing.”

He looked surprised.

Not every painful room needs to become a library, chapel, memorial, or healing garden.

Sometimes a bad room can just become irrelevant architecture.

The portrait stayed on the wall because it was good art.

Isabella did not care.

That helped.

The collar was different.

Marcus still had it.

Months later he brought it to me.

Placed it on my desk.

“I don’t want this.”

Neither did I.

I looked at the old leather.

Victoria at eight.

Isabella at three.

Two children separated by fifty-five years and one adult failure.

“Burn it?”

Marcus asked.

“No.”

“Keep it?”

“No.”

We cut off the metal buckle so no one could use it again.

Leather went into ordinary trash.

Buckle into scrap.

No shrine.

No lesson mounted in glass.

Memory did not need the object to survive.

Marcus watched the bin.

Then said:

“You told me to wear it for life.”

I remembered.

Rage.

“Yes.”

“Do you still mean it?”

I thought.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“I meant consequence.”

Then:

“Not humiliation.”

Important distinction.

If I copied Victoria’s method onto Marcus in the name of justice, we learned nothing.

He nodded.

That was the closest thing to relief I gave him.
