Chapter 6

Victoria refused to speak to Rosa.

At first.

“Why would I?”

I handed her no phone.

No pressure.

“Then don’t.”

That irritated her.

Good.

She expected confrontation.

Instead she received choice.

A week passed.

Then two.

She asked:

“What did Rosa say?”

I told her one sentence.

“You survived despite him.”

Victoria laughed.

Sharp.

“Easy for her.”

“Was it?”

My aunt looked at me.

Rosa lost her job.

Her references.

Housing.

She left the estate with one suitcase because she fed a child who had been denied dinner.

Not easy.

Victoria looked away.

Then:

“She made me weak.”

There.

Finally.

“How?”

“I cried with her.”

That was what Victoria hated.

Not the food.

Not the hiding.

The crying.

With Rosa, she allowed herself to be a child.

After Rosa was fired, Victoria decided that weakness had caused loss.

If she had not needed Rosa, Rosa could not have been taken away.

So need itself became danger.

She never asked anyone for comfort again.

Then raised Marcus similarly.

Not with collars.

But with absence.

“You were hurt?”

“Handle it.”

“You were scared?”

“Stand straight.”

“You lost?”

“Stop complaining.”

Marcus grew up believing maternal pride appeared only after endurance.

Then he watched her put the collar on Isabella.

And part of him recognized childhood discipline.

Not emergency.

That was why he did not intervene.

I looked at Victoria.

“You didn’t preserve strength.”

She stared.

“You preserved the rule that hurt you.”

Her eyes filled.

She hated that.

Good.

Pain is not always evidence someone is wrong.

Sometimes it means the sentence finally landed where defenses cannot reach.
