Chapter 4

Bianca discovered Hattie’s treatment of Mother three weeks before my trip.
Not the chain.
That came later.
The beginning was smaller.
Meals delayed.
Medication placed too far away.
Visitors discouraged.
Mother’s staff replaced gradually with people loyal to Hattie.
Not imprisoned.
Managed.
Bianca noticed because Adelaide stopped attending breakfast.
Then Sunday lunch.
Then Ella’s afternoon tea.
Each absence came with explanation.
Tired.
Resting.
Not hungry.
Private.
Bianca went upstairs herself.
Mother was furious.
Not weak.
Not confused.
Furious.
Hattie had started asking questions.
About what?
My late father.
Old promises.
People Mother trusted.
Family history.
Nothing operational.
Nothing valuable to outsiders.
Except one thing.
Hattie wanted Mother to say publicly that after Adelaide, Hattie should become the family’s senior female voice.
There it was.
Not boss.
Not successor.
Symbol.
Seat beside family marriages.
Funerals.
Baptisms.
Private disputes.
The role Mother held for decades.
Bianca now occupied much of it naturally as my wife.
Hattie believed it belonged to blood, not marriage.
Mother disagreed.
She told Hattie:
“There is no throne.”
That enraged her.
Nolan encouraged it.
Why?
Because Hattie’s informal influence gave him access I had repeatedly denied.
He could bring people to family tables through her.
Ask favors through her.
Occupy rooms he had not earned.
Bianca began closing those doors.
Not dramatically.
She simply asked:
Why is Nolan here?
Who invited these men?
Why is Ella’s lunch interrupted by business?
Why is Adelaide being treated like furniture?
Nolan hated questions.
Hattie hated the woman asking them.
Then Bianca found Mother crying after Hattie refused her dinner over another argument about “respect.”
That was when my wife decided she would tell me everything the moment I returned.
Hattie overheard.
Six hours later, Graham received his invitation.
One day later, Bianca was gone.
The fake affair was not the objective.
It was cover.
If I believed Bianca had left me, every accusation she made against Hattie afterward would look like retaliation from an unfaithful wife.
Elegant.
May you like
Ugly.
And very close to working.
