Chapter 9

I dealt with Nolan first.

Not violently.

He expected violence.

Men like him prefer it.

A broken nose becomes proof they were important enough to enrage you.

I gave him something quieter.

Distance.

Every Carbone property closed to him.

Every invitation ended.

Every associate informed directly:

Nolan Hale does not represent Salvatore Carbone.

Not dishonored.

Not hunted.

Simply himself.

He hated it.

“You’re destroying twenty years.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I’m removing my name from them.”

There is a difference.

Without perceived proximity, he still had his intelligence.

His contacts.

His own reputation.

If that was enough, he would survive.

If not, then most of what he possessed had never been his.

He asked about Evan.

“Separate person.”

Good.

No family punishment.

Evan retained legitimate contracts reviewed normally.

Nolan looked almost offended.

“You’re rewarding him for turning on me.”

“No.”

“I’m refusing to punish him for sharing your surname.”

Apparently revolutionary.

Then Hattie.

Harder.

Blood.

Childhood.

Mother had held Hattie as a baby.

I remembered teaching her to drive at sixteen.

None of that disappeared.

Neither did the chain.

I removed her from every hosting role.

No Carbone banquet management.

No access to household staff.

No private authority over Mother or Ella.

Family dinners only by invitation.

She stared.

“You’re throwing me out.”

“No.”

“You remain my cousin.”

Her face twisted.

“That’s nothing.”

There.

The same disease.

Family without influence felt worthless to her.

I looked at her.

“If being loved is nothing unless it lets you command someone, then we have found the real problem.”

She cried.

May you like

I did not soften the boundary.

Love and access are not the same thing.
