Chapter 15

Ethan? Wrong story, no. Need continue with Noah/Marcus/Victoria. Let's stay consistent.

A year did not pass cleanly.

Marcus remained outside command.

Some captains still went to him socially.

Fine.

He was allowed friends.

The first time one came to me saying, “Marcus thinks—”

I stopped him.

Not angrily.

“What do you think?”

The man blinked.

Interesting how long systems survive through habit.

He answered.

We discussed it.

No filter.

Marcus later heard.

He did not interfere.

Progress.

Victoria moved out of state for several months.

Not exile.

Choice.

When she returned, she asked to speak with me.

I agreed.

Public sitting room.

No engagement ring.

No assumptions.

She looked different.

Not softer.

Less certain.

“I used to think Maria was stealing Noah from me.”

I said nothing.

“She never was.”

“No.”

“I thought Isabella was stealing you from me too.”

“She was dead.”

“I know.”

Victoria looked ashamed.

“I competed with memories because memories couldn’t reject me.”

That was accurate.

“What changed?”

She thought.

“I realized I wanted relationships that proved I mattered.”

Pause.

“Not relationships where the other person could choose how close I got.”

There.

Control again.

Same root as Marcus.

Different form.

“Do you want to see Noah?”

“Yes.”

I waited.

She corrected herself.

“If he wants.”

Better.

I asked later.

Noah remembered her.

Of course.

“Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“She break hearing?”

“Yes.”

He thought.

“No.”

Simple.

I told her.

She cried.

Then nodded.

No complaint.

That mattered.

Maybe someday his answer would change.

Maybe not.

Repair does not create entitlement to an eventual yes.

That was the hardest lesson for people used to earning outcomes through persistence.

Sometimes the consequence is permanent.
