Chapter 3

Noah remembered fragments.

That was enough.

Three-year-olds do not recount conspiracies in order.

They give you the pieces adults were stupid enough to say near them.

“Uncle Marcus said Maria knows Mommy’s secret.”

My breathing changed.

Noah’s biological mother.

Isabella Caruso.

Dead two years.

I looked at Maria.

Her face tightened.

“What secret?”

Victoria immediately said:

“There isn’t one.”

I turned toward her.

“I wasn’t asking you.”

Maria hesitated.

That mattered.

“Maria.”

She looked toward Noah.

Then me.

“Isabella did not trust Marcus.”

Marcus laughed.

“My dead cousin’s wife disliked me. Shocking.”

“She was your cousin too,” Maria said.

His smile vanished.

Good.

“What did she know?”

Maria had served this estate for seventeen years.

She knew my mother.

My father.

Isabella.

She knew which fights were real and which smiles were for dinner guests.

Six months before Isabella died, she began noticing Marcus meeting capos privately after council sessions.

Nothing forbidden.

But he used my name.

“He would tell men, ‘Rocco wants this handled quietly.’”

My jaw tightened.

I looked at Marcus.

“Did I?”

He shrugged.

“Sometimes.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Silence.

Maria continued.

Isabella asked me about it once.

I had been busy.

I remembered.

She told me Marcus was becoming “a second door” into my office.

I laughed.

Said every boss needed one.

She asked:

“What happens when people stop using the first?”

I kissed her forehead and left for a meeting.

My chest hurt now.

She had seen it before I did.

“What did she do?”

Maria answered.

“She began checking.”

Not paperwork.

People.

Drivers.

Captains.

Staff.

She learned Marcus was building habits.

Men asking him before asking me.

Staff waiting for his approval.

Household problems reaching him first.

Nothing openly disloyal.

That was the genius of it.

He did not need to replace the boss.

He only needed to become the person everyone passed through before reaching him.

I looked at Marcus.

“And Victoria?”

Maria’s face hardened.

“She was supposed to become the same thing inside your home.”

My fiancée went pale.

Two doors.

Marcus outside.

Victoria inside.

May you like

Close both around me.

Then convince me the silence was peace.
