Chapter 6

The memorial concerts began six months after Lily disappeared.

Camille’s idea.

I approved them.

At the time, I thought grief needed purpose.

Funds went to children’s hospitals, bereavement programs, and families of dead associates.

Real causes.

Real money.

That made what came next worse.

The corruption was not theft.

It was influence.

Adrian selected vendors.

Hosts.

Recipients.

Families who received support often dealt directly with Voss coordinators, not Hawthorne men.

Gratitude followed the people who handed over help.

Over eighteen months, the Voss name became attached to every compassionate act performed in Lily’s memory.

My daughter’s supposed death had created an emotional empire.

Quiet.

Elegant.

Almost respectable.

I met Adrian at the hotel ballroom after the staff cleared it.

Rows of chairs faced the empty stage.

Lily’s flowers remained.

“Did you steal money?”

“No.”

I believed him.

“Did you buy loyalty with it?”

He flinched.

Better.

“We helped people.”

“Yes.”

“And made sure they knew who helped.”

Silence.

The Voss family had always lacked the hard power of Hawthorne.

No large crews.

No major routes.

But they understood hospitality.

Charity.

Weddings.

Funerals.

They could build relationships where guns were useless.

Lily’s memorial made them essential.

If Lily returned, the story changed instantly.

The charitable work remained good.

But Camille and Adrian’s moral authority collapsed.

Every speech about honoring her became grotesque.

Every photograph became evidence of knowledge they did not share.

“You kept my child hidden partly because your family liked what mourning gave you.”

Adrian looked sick.

“Not at first.”

That phrase again.

Not at first.

Nothing starts at its final ugliness.

Then I asked:

“Who else knew?”

He gave me four names.

All Voss staff.

One driver.

One bookkeeper.

One housekeeper at Margaret’s cottage.

No Hawthorne captain.

No old council.

No massive conspiracy.

Smaller.

Closer.

More believable.

Then one name surprised me.

Cora Ellis.

I stared.

“She knew?”

Adrian shook his head quickly.

“No.”

“Then why her name?”

“Because Margaret tried to reach her three months ago.”

My blood cooled.

Cora had almost discovered Lily long before tonight.
