The first person Lily asked to see outside the house was Margaret.

Not Camille.

Not Adrian.

Margaret.

I arranged it.

Private.

No audience.

Margaret cried before Lily entered.

Lily did not.

She walked to the bed.

“You lied.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

“You said Dad needed time.”

“Yes.”

“You said Camille knew what was best.”

“Yes.”

Lily’s face tightened.

“Why?”

Margaret answered honestly.

“Because I was afraid I had already helped keep you too long.”

Lily understood enough to be angry.

Not enough to explain that pattern.

She turned toward me.

“Can we go?”

“Yes.”

No forced forgiveness.

Margaret accepted it.

Before leaving, Lily stopped.

“Thank you for making soup.”

Margaret broke.
