Chapter 8

Avelise wanted the lipstick removed from the staff changing room immediately.

Not metaphorically.

Serilda had left the tube there after the reception.

Avelise picked it up with two fingers and dropped it into a wastebasket.

Then looked at me.

“Can I do that?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Small authority.

Useful.

I offered leave.

She took four days.

When she returned, she changed one thing.

No lace headband.

Why?

“Mrs. Vale said Mrs. Lenora wore one when she was young.”

That made my stomach turn.

Avelise had worn it for two years because the housekeeping uniform included it.

Now it felt like costume.

We changed the uniform policy.

Headband optional.

Simple.

Then Avelise asked something harder.

“Did I really look like her?”

I thought carefully.

“A little around the mouth.”

She looked unhappy.

I added:

“That does not make you connected to her.”

Good.

Her shoulders relaxed.

She had become afraid other people would keep seeing Lenora when they looked at her.

Identity contaminated by resemblance.

I understood more than expected.

For years people looked at me and saw my father.

Same eyes.

Same hands.

Same quiet voice.

Sometimes resemblance becomes obligation.

“No one in this house is allowed to make you perform someone else again.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Even Mrs. Lenora?”

May you like

“Especially her.”

That felt like the first honest thing I had done with Lenora’s memory in years.
