Chapter 9

We returned the necklace.

Not immediately.

First I had it examined.

No damage.

No stone removed.

No hidden compartment.

No secret message.

Important.

Sometimes an object is only an object.

The mystery had been human.

I went to the crypt with Maribel.

Not Evangeline.

Not Serilda.

Maribel had been there the day Lenora was buried.

She stood beside me as the coffin was briefly reopened.

I looked at my wife.

Nine years gone.

Time changes even what memory tries to preserve.

I did not stare long.

I placed the necklace back where I had once put it.

Then whispered:

“Sorry.”

Maribel heard.

“For what?”

I closed the clasp.

“Keeping her too busy after she died.”

Maribel smiled sadly.

“She’d complain.”

“I know.”

The coffin closed again.

This time, the crypt access changed.

No ceremonial family privilege.

No Vale key.

No Wrenmoor cousin walking in because tradition assumed good judgment.

Permission required.

Specific.

Boring.

Necessary.

Then I gave the old ceremonial key to Evangeline.

She stared.

“Why?”

“It doesn’t open anything anymore.”

Her face crumpled.

That was the point.

Her old authority over Lenora’s resting place ended with a useless key in her hand.

May you like

Not cruelty.

Clarity.
