Chapter 14

Julian dated again when Avice was six.

A woman named Eleanor Reed.

Museum architect.

Not Mafia.

Diane hated that for approximately three minutes before remembering her rehabilitation.

Progress.

Julian told Avice first.

Not details.

Just:

“I like someone.”

Avice asked:

“Baby?”

Julian froze.

I was there.

My chest tightened.

Three years later, the fake pregnancy still shaped the category.

“No.”

He answered carefully.

“No baby.”

“Pillow?”

“No.”

Then he laughed softly.

“Just Eleanor.”

Avice accepted that.

Good.

Julian did not rush marriage.

Did not introduce promises.

Did not ask Avice to call anyone Mom.

Eleanor understood.

That mattered.

When she eventually attended a family dinner, Diane offered her the seat beside Julian.

Avice walked toward the chair beside me.

No one moved it.

I noticed Diane notice.

She looked away.

Small correction.

No announcement.

Best kind.

Eleanor and Julian lasted.

Maybe because nobody needed pregnancy to make the relationship legitimate.

Maybe because they were simply compatible.

Not every healthy relationship needs to exist as moral answer to an unhealthy one.

Life is allowed to be ordinary.

That became increasingly precious to me.
