Chapter 9

Julian moved to Newport three months later.

Not immediately.

He wanted to make sure he was not moving purely to prove Diane wrong.

Good.

He rented first.

Avice chose the room with the round window.

That settled the purchase later.

I visited.

Diane refused.

Fine.

The first weekend, Avice brought me her handmade gala card.

Crushed now.

Still recognizable.

“Baby pillow.”

“Yes.”

Then she pointed at the drawing of Diane.

Small purple shape.

“Diane mean.”

Children are efficient historians.

“She was mean to you.”

“Family?”

Avice asked.

I understood.

The chair.

That seat is for family.

“No begging.”

My chest tightened.

“You are family.”

“Because Daddy?”

“Because you’re Avice.”

She frowned.

Apparently too philosophical.

I simplified.

“You never have to earn your chair with me.”

Better.

She nodded.

Then climbed into mine.

Literal child.

Good.

Julian watched from the doorway.

Later he said:

“I should’ve stopped all of it sooner.”

“Yes.”

No comfort.

Then:

“I knew for forty-eight hours.”

“Yes.”

“I keep thinking that’s nothing compared to eleven weeks.”

“Don’t compare guilt like invoices.”

He looked at me.

“Then what do I do with it?”

“Use it.”

He waited.

“Next time truth is inconvenient, remember what two days cost.”

That was enough.

No permanent self-hatred.

No easy absolution.

Information.

Julian stepped back from several family responsibilities voluntarily.

Not punishment.

Parenthood.

He wanted evenings.

School mornings.

Space to rebuild ordinary trust with his daughter.

Some capos whispered he had gone soft.

I let them.

A man choosing breakfast with his child over another late meeting did not threaten Lombardi strength.

If anything, it corrected it.
