Chapter 12

The independent family-court evaluator spent months reviewing the situation.

Matteo hated the process.

He cooperated anyway.

The evaluator visited Elena’s home.

Observed Matteo with Emma.

Reviewed school records.

Examined the support account.

Interviewed staff.

Asked uncomfortable questions about the Bellandi estate and the people who moved through it.

Matteo answered.

Not perfectly.

Truthfully.

The evaluator eventually concluded there was no evidence Elena had mismanaged substantial financial support because she had never possessed substantial financial support.

That single finding destroyed the central premise of Lucille’s draft guardianship case.

Elena’s housing instability was real.

So were the missed payments and food shortages.

But they were consequences of restricted access to funds, not proof of irresponsibility.

The court also criticized Matteo’s decision to delegate parental communication through family intermediaries.

He accepted that too.

A direct co-parenting system was established.

No Renato.

No Lucille.

No family assistant.

Matteo and Elena used a standard court-approved parenting application for scheduling and expenses.

Matteo initially hated the idea that every request would exist in a neutral system.

Then he realized that was exactly why it worked.

Nobody could quietly edit the truth between them.

Emma began spending regular time with Matteo again.

At first she hid food.

A roll in her cardigan pocket.

Crackers inside a toy bag.

Half a banana wrapped in a napkin.

Her therapist explained that food insecurity could leave habits behind even after the refrigerator was full.

Matteo did not tell her to stop.

He simply made sure food was always available.

One afternoon Emma took two dinner rolls from the table.

Matteo watched.

“For Mommy?”

Emma shook her head.

“Later.”

“Okay.”

That was all.

Weeks later he noticed she stopped carrying them.

No announcement.

No dramatic breakthrough.

She simply began trusting that the next meal would exist.
