Chapter 9

The unfiled court documents were discovered through Lucille’s former family-law firm.

The firm cooperated after Julia raised concerns that financial information supplied by Lucille might have been materially false.

There was no signed custody petition.

But there were drafts.

Several.

They described Elena as increasingly unable to provide a stable home despite “extraordinary financial support.”

One draft claimed she had access to approximately fifty thousand dollars each month.

Another cited the Lake Forest townhouse as housing “made available but inconsistently utilized.”

The luxury SUV was described as transportation “provided for the child.”

The private school deposit became evidence of education “offered and declined.”

The concierge medical service was described as healthcare “fully funded but unused.”

Matteo read the language in silence.

Every unused service had been transformed into Elena’s refusal.

Every hardship became her choice.

Every dollar spent somewhere she could not reach became proof that she was wasting support.

Then Julia reached the final section.

Proposed temporary guardian.

The name had been left blank in the earliest draft.

In the newest version:

Lucille Bellandi.

Elena stood at the opposite end of the conference table.

“So that was it.”

Julia shook her head.

“We still don’t know whether she intended to file.”

Elena stared at her.

“She spent seven months creating the evidence.”

Matteo said nothing.

Because he had just noticed the date on the latest draft.

Three weeks before the birthday gala.

Lucille had already scheduled another meeting with the custody consultant.

Two days after her birthday.

The subject line:

Final stability review.

Matteo felt cold.

Emma appearing at the gala in filthy clothes had not simply exposed a theft.

It had happened immediately before Lucille planned to complete whatever case she believed she had built.

Julia received another file that evening.

A collection of photographs.

Elena’s duplex exterior.

Her old carless driveway.

An overdue utility notice visible through an open envelope.

Emma wearing the same worn cardigan she wore at the gala.

Someone had been documenting the poverty.

Not helping.

Documenting.

May you like

And suddenly Matteo understood that the greatest danger had never been the money disappearing.

It was what somebody wanted Elena’s poverty to prove.
