Chapter 12

Grant expected Rocco to destroy him.

Instead, Rocco gave him a choice.

Tell the truth to everyone whose money he had taken—

or Rocco would do it for him.

Grant laughed when he first heard it.

“You think humiliation scares me?”

“No.”

Rocco placed a list of names on the table.

“Debt does.”

The money Grant and Bianca had collected was not sitting safely in an account.

Much of it had been spent.

Luxury expenses.

Private investments.

Payments to people helping maintain the secret operation.

Some could be recovered.

Some could not.

Rocco refused to repay everything personally.

Doing so would turn their lies into his obligations.

Instead, every client would be told exactly what happened.

Grant hated the plan.

It stripped away the one shield he still possessed.

Rocco’s name.

Over the following week, meetings took place one by one.

Some people demanded repayment.

Some threatened retaliation.

Some were embarrassed they had believed Grant.

Rocco promised only what was actually his responsibility.

Nothing more.

For several associates, that restraint was shocking.

The old Bellandi response would have been intimidation.

The new response was clarity.

Michael watched the change from a distance.

One evening Rocco asked him:

“Why did you finally come forward?”

Michael considered the question.

“Because Mia was still standing there when my shift changed.”

Rocco looked down.

“I kept thinking somebody had to say something.”

“You should’ve said it earlier.”

“Yes.”

Michael did not defend himself.

Then he added:

“But you should’ve built a place where saying it earlier felt possible.”

Rocco looked at him.

That sentence hurt because it was true.

Bianca and Grant had exploited his reputation.

But Rocco had spent years creating the reputation they exploited.
