Chapter 2

Rocco took Mia upstairs to the club’s private medical room.

The club nurse found dehydration, swollen feet, and exhaustion but no serious physical injury.

That was supposed to make Rocco feel better.

It did not.

Mia drank apple juice while sitting on his lap.

For the first time since the garage, Bianca and Grant were nowhere near her.

Rocco spoke softly.

“What secret work did you see?”

Mia frowned as if trying to understand the question herself.

“Bianca had envelopes.”

“What kind?”

“Big ones.”

“Where?”

Mia pointed downward.

“Downstairs.”

Rocco looked toward Michael.

The parking supervisor hesitated.

“There’s an old equipment storage room past the service ramp.”

Rocco knew it.

It had once been used to store clay-court supplies.

Nobody was supposed to use it anymore.

“When was the last time you opened it?”

“I didn’t.”

Michael looked toward the door.

“Grant did.”

Rocco’s eyes narrowed.

Michael explained that Grant had requested the storage-room master key several times during the previous two months.

He always claimed he was checking unused club equipment.

Michael had never questioned it.

Grant was part of Rocco’s organization.

At Bellandi properties, that name opened doors.

Rocco looked down at Mia.

“What happened after you saw the envelopes?”

“Bianca got mad.”

“Why?”

“I asked what they were.”

Mia’s tiny fingers tightened around the juice box.

“And then?”

“She said I wasn’t supposed to be there.”

Rocco closed his eyes briefly.

Bianca had not punished Mia because the child embarrassed her at breakfast.

That story was already collapsing.

Michael spoke carefully.

“Boss, there’s something you should know.”

Rocco looked up.

“Mrs. Bellandi wasn’t the only person using that storage room.”

“Who else?”

May you like

Michael’s eyes moved toward the hallway where Grant was being guarded.

“Almost every time she went inside, her brother was already there.”
