Chapter 13

Elena did not forgive Matteo simply because he saved Luca.

That surprised him.

He never asked directly for forgiveness.

But he expected the rescue to matter more.

It did matter.

It just did not erase the six weeks before it.

One night after Luca finally slept for almost four consecutive hours, Elena sat at the kitchen island while Matteo made coffee he did not need.

“I want to tell you something without you fixing it.”

Matteo looked at her.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“I’m serious.”

He put the cup down.

“Okay.”

Elena folded her hands.

“When your aunt first gave me the papers, I thought they were ridiculous.”

Matteo listened.

“The second time, I got angry.”

He nodded.

“The third time, I got scared.”

His expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because everybody kept behaving like I was the one creating conflict.”

She looked at him.

“Viola called me emotional. Carlo called me inexperienced. You called them old-fashioned.”

Matteo said nothing.

“After a while, I started checking myself before every conversation.”

Her voice stayed steady.

“Am I too tired? Am I overreacting? Did she really say it that way? Maybe I’m making this bigger.”

Matteo felt sick.

“That’s what they needed.”

“Yes.”

“And I helped.”

“Yes.”

The word was painful because she did not dramatize it.

He sat across from her.

“I should have believed you.”

“You should have listened before deciding whether there was something to believe.”

That distinction stayed with him.

She continued.

“I don’t think you wanted me silenced.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“But you were comfortable enough that everyone else’s behavior looked smaller from where you stood.”

He nodded.

That was true too.

Matteo was the most powerful person in the family.

Viola never handed him documents suggesting he was temporarily incapable.

Carlo never told him a newborn made him irrational.

Nobody treated his exhaustion as evidence his decisions should be transferred to somebody else.

He had mistaken the absence of pressure on himself for proof that the pressure on Elena was minor.

“I’m changing it.”

“I know.”

“Does that help?”

“Yes.”

“Enough?”

Elena looked toward the baby monitor.

“I don’t know yet.”

That answer became the one thing Matteo refused to push.

He could remove Carlo.

He could restructure companies.
