Chapter 8

Matteo made the decision the following morning.
Carlo was suspended from every legitimate Rinaldi company.
His access to corporate systems was revoked.
His authority as capo was frozen pending internal family review.
Viola lost access to the estate, family office, and foundation.
Then Matteo authorized Rebecca to report the courtyard incident to law enforcement and child-protection authorities with full witness access.
Finally, he authorized an external forensic audit of Rinaldi Holdings and notified the board about the suspected unauthorized collateral pledge.
The room went silent after he signed.
His senior business adviser looked at him.
“You understand what this opens.”
“Yes.”
“Banks.”
“Yes.”
“Regulators.”
“Yes.”
“Other transactions.”
“Yes.”
The adviser lowered his voice.
“You cannot decide which questions stop at Carlo.”
“I know.”
Elena watched her husband.
This was not how Rinaldis handled things.
That was the point.
Matteo called Lakecrest Capital directly with counsel present.
He disclosed that corporate authorization for the distribution center guarantee was disputed and requested a standstill while records were reviewed.
The lender was furious.
But less furious than it would have been if the information emerged after default.
Lakecrest froze additional funding to Carlo’s project.
Construction stopped within forty-eight hours.
Contractors walked off.
Carlo called Matteo.
Rebecca advised him not to answer.
He answered once.
“You destroyed the project.”
Matteo stood in his office looking at Luca asleep in a bassinet.
“No.”
“You opened the books knowing what would happen.”
“Yes.”
“Two hundred people work on that site.”
“You pledged my company’s property.”
“I was fixing it.”
“With what authority?”
“I would have repaid everything.”
“When?”
Silence.
Matteo continued.
“You held my son over fire.”
Carlo’s voice changed.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen like that.”
Matteo went still.
“What does that mean?”
Carlo realized the mistake.
“Nothing.”
“You said it wasn’t supposed to happen like that.”
“Viola pushed Elena. Elena started screaming. Everything got out of control.”
“Who was supposed to do what?”
Carlo hung up.
That sentence created a new question.
Not whether the fire-bowl attack was wrong.
That was settled.
Whether the confrontation had been expected in some form.
Rebecca cautioned Matteo.
“Do not turn one phrase into a conspiracy.”
He nodded.
But then the catering manager asked to speak.
Viola had changed the courtyard setup ninety minutes before the celebration.
She specifically asked that the decorative fire bowl remain lit beside the area where Elena and Luca would receive guests.
The catering manager thought it was aesthetic.
Now he wasn’t sure.
Matteo’s face changed.
May you like
The fire itself might not have been part of an elaborate plan.
But Viola had been arranging the space around Elena before Carlo ever walked outside.
