Chapter 11

Marco fought harder.

Not physically.

Pride.

He demanded a private meeting.

“You’re reducing my territory anyway.”

“Yes.”

His original fear came true.

“Because of this?”

“No.”

I had planned it before.

That frustrated him more.

He had risked everything to prevent something already based on ordinary business judgment.

Why reduce him?

His territory had grown too dependent on him personally.

No second layer.

No delegation.

Every decision flowed through Marco.

Effective until he disappeared.

Fragile.

I wanted smaller, stronger structures.

He interpreted structural criticism as personal rejection.

Then created the very crisis proving my point.

I said that.

He stared.

Then laughed bitterly.

“Perfect.”

“Yes.”

He asked whether he remained capo.

For now.

With conditions.

No control over my personal schedule.

No involvement in household staffing.

No private discussions with Anna.

No contact with Mia.

He looked offended at the last.

“I never touched the child.”

“No.”

“You simply planned around the assumption nobody would believe her mother.”

Silence.

That counted.

Then he asked:

“What happens if I refuse?”

“You leave the role.”

No threat.

Choice.

He stayed.

Interesting.

Maybe power mattered less than identity.

Maybe he would learn.

May you like

Maybe not.

Consequences do not require certainty about redemption.
