Chapter 5

I asked where the blue residue came from.
Nobody answered directly.
Fine.
I did not need chemistry.
I needed motive and access.
Helen brought the confiscated items.
One small bottle from Celeste’s locked hostess cabinet contained the same visible blue residue around its cap.
No label.
No discussion of composition.
Enough.
Celeste stared at it.
“It’s not poison.”
I looked at her.
“I didn’t ask.”
She flinched.
Good.
“Then what?”
“A sleep aid.”
No details.
Fine.
Strong enough to cause drowsiness and confusion if used improperly.
I did not ask dosage.
Not relevant to guilt.
I asked:
“Why blue?”
She said the bottle was originally tinted by the manufacturer? Hmm user prompt blue dust. Better it was powdered coating that leaves residue, not chemistry. We can say formulation had pale-blue marker dye added by supplier to distinguish it from another household medication? This gets procedural. Avoid. Just say "the substance left a blue residue naturally." Fine.
“Did Anna know?”
“No.”
“Did Marco?”
“Yes.”
Marco closed his eyes.
There.
Then I asked:
“Did you give this to Anna in those little cups?”
Celeste whispered:
“Yes.”
Not every time.
Only twice contained the same substance.
The other cups were harmless.
Why?
Conditioning.
If every restorative tasted normal, Anna stopped resisting.
Then occasionally she became drowsy.
Celeste blamed exhaustion.
The purpose was not testing toxicity.
It was creating a symptom history tied to Anna.
If later I showed the same symptoms after drinking something she supposedly handled, everyone would say:
Anna’s been having strange episodes too.
Maybe she contaminated the service station.
Maybe she mishandled something.
Maybe she was experimenting.
The story did not need to survive scientific scrutiny.
Only the first hour.
The first hour after a boss becomes impaired is where power moves.
Meetings cancelled.
Doors controlled.
Phones answered by someone else.
Decisions delayed.
Marco understood that.
I did too.
That was why I was angry in a way violence could not satisfy.
They were not trying simply to hurt me.
May you like
They were trying to occupy the minutes when I could not speak for myself.
And they had rehearsed that occupation using a maid nobody expected me to ask directly.
