Celestine wrote Amabel a letter.
Amabel burned it unopened.
Her choice.
Celestine wrote another.
Amabel returned it.
Third time, she stopped.

Respect eventually.
Six months later, Amabel asked to see her.

I stayed out.
Later Amabel told me what happened.
Celestine apologized.
Specific.
For threatening her job.
For using their childhood debts.
For taking Julian.
For telling Miriam that Amabel agreed.
For calling her unfit.
Then Amabel asked:
“Why did you hate me?”
Celestine answered:
“I didn’t.”
That made Amabel angrier.
Good.
Sometimes hate would be easier.

Amabel answered:
“You became it.”
