Chapter 14

Celestine built a life outside her father.
That mattered more than apologies.
She moved out of the Bellamy estate.
Started managing a design firm she had quietly invested in years earlier.
No Arthur.
No Wycliffe.
No engagement ring.
One evening we met for coffee.
Not reconciliation.
Conversation.
She looked different.
Less polished maybe.
More real.
“I hated being replaceable.”
There.
The core.
“By Amabel?”
“By anyone.”
Arthur raised her to believe usefulness created security.
Beautiful daughter.
Social bridge.
Future wife.
She performed perfectly.
Then Amabel became pregnant and suddenly Celestine saw a form of connection she could not outperform.
My child.
She panicked.
“I thought if Julian existed in your life, I’d become optional.”
I looked at her.
“You were always optional.”
She flinched.
Then understood.
“So was I.”
Marriage is choice.
Not necessity.
That was what made it valuable.
Celestine had spent her life trying to become impossible to leave.
In the process, she did something that made leaving necessary.
May you like
Tragic.
Not unfair.
