Chapter 12

The seventeen brass tags stayed on my desk for months.

I did not know what to do with them.

Destroying them felt symbolic.

Keeping them felt wrong.

Then Elodie saw them.

“Why do you still have those?”

Fair.

“History.”

She stared.

“No.”

I almost smiled.

“No?”

“Those were used to scare people.”

True.

“What would you do?”

“Melt them.”

Direct.

So we did.

Not ceremonially.

A metalworker who handled household repairs melted the brass.

Asked what shape I wanted afterward.

I had no idea.

Elodie did.

Door handles.

I laughed.

She didn’t.

“People should open things with them.”

Hard to argue.

Seventeen tags became four sets of brass handles.

One went on the staff dining-room doors.

One on the payroll office.

One on the garden pavilion.

One on the house kitchen.

Places people had previously entered as workers carrying inherited shame.

Now just doors.

Maybe too symbolic.

Still useful.

Wallace heard.

Called it disrespectful.

Excellent.

Then he surprised everyone.

He came to see Elodie.

Not me.

She almost refused.

Then agreed with me present across the room.

Wallace sat.

Old.

Smaller without ceremony.

He said:

“Your father was innocent of the shipment theft.”

Elodie did not move.

“He kept my family operating.”

More.

“I owed him.”

More.

“I destroyed his name because I was ashamed of owing a man who worked for me.”

There.

Finally.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Elodie stared for a long time.

“My father died thinking nobody believed him.”

Wallace closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You don’t get to fix that.”

“No.”

Good.

She asked:

“Why now?”

Wallace answered:

“Because Celia stopped speaking to me.”

Interesting.

Not moral awakening.

Consequence.

He lost his daughter.

That made him review what pride had cost before.

Elodie nodded.

“I hope you become better.”

He looked surprised.

Then:

“I don’t need to watch.”

Perfect.

She stood.

Meeting over.

Wallace left.

No hug.

May you like

No forgiveness.

Just truth arriving thirty years late.
