Chapter 16

Elodie stopped working for me after four years.

That surprised me more than it should have.

She had saved enough.

Wanted to open a small catering business.

“Why?”

She stared.

“Because I don’t want to be a maid forever.”

Fair.

I hated how obvious that was only after she said it.

I invested?

No.

I offered.

She refused.

Then reconsidered one thing.

A loan.

Real terms.

Written clearly.

No family obligation.

No future service.

No control.

She made me repeat that twice.

Good.

The business did well.

Not spectacularly.

Realistically.

Weddings.

Corporate dinners.

Private parties.

She hired four people.

Paid on Friday automatically.

Micah sometimes sat in the back doing homework.

One evening I visited after closing.

He was ten.

Tall.

Still suspicious of free dessert.

Progress slower than architecture.

Elodie handed me coffee.

“Remember the coins?”

“Yes.”

“I kept one.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

She opened a drawer.

One small coin.

The kind Celia scattered.

“I thought about throwing it away.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Reminder.”

I expected symbolism.

She surprised me.

“Of how poor my judgment gets when I’m hungry.”

I laughed.

Good.

No shrine.

No trauma object.

Just a woman remembering not to skip lunch.

Then Micah called from the back:

“Mom, can I have pizza?”

She shouted:

“You ate.”

“I’m hungry again.”

I looked at her.

“Family tradition?”

“Apparently.”

Normal life.

Again.

That became my favorite outcome.

Not people spending forever discussing what happened.

People eventually having different problems.
