Chapter 11

Domenico did not play.
That was the first thing Julian did not expect.
The boy waited for anger.
For Conrad to demand Eli.
For Domenico to accuse Julian.
Instead Domenico sat.
“You’re hungry?”
Julian stared.
“What?”
“You ate today?”
Silence.
Conrad’s eyes filled.
Julian became defensive.
“I’m fine.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
“I don’t need food.”
Domenico looked toward the kitchen.
“Bring dinner.”
Julian stood.
“No.”
Domenico looked at him.
“Sit.”
Something flashed in Julian’s face.
Fear.
Command tone.
Old conditioning.
Domenico immediately changed his voice.
“You can stand.”
Julian stared.
Domenico continued:
“Food goes on the table whether you eat or not.”
Conrad watched.
Understanding.
Julian had been controlled through obedience.
Do not repeat.
A plate arrived.
Chicken.
Potatoes.
Bread.
Julian ignored it for two minutes.
Then stared at the bread.
Conrad looked away.
Domenico said nothing.
Eventually Julian took one piece.
Then another.
Nobody commented.
Only after he finished half the meal did he speak.
“Shepherd’s name is Evelyn Cross.”
Domenico frowned.
Conrad did too.
Miriam went pale.
She knew.
“Who?”
“Your childhood nanny.”
Domenico froze.
Evelyn Cross.
He had not heard the name in twenty years.
She had cared for Domenico from age six to eleven.
Then worked with Conrad’s branch.
Then disappeared after marrying.
Domenico remembered warm hands.
Bedtime stories.
A woman who always knew when his father had punished him.
“Shepherd?”
Julian nodded.
“No.”
Domenico shook his head.
“You’re lying.”
Julian kept eating.
“Because she was kind?”
Domenico stopped.
“That’s how she was selected.”
“What?”
“She knew what hurt children.”
Conrad whispered:
“Where is she?”
“Everywhere.”
“Useful.”
Julian looked at him.
“You asked name. Not address.”
Conrad’s anger rose.
Domenico lifted one hand.
Enough.
Julian continued:
“Evelyn was trained by Rafael after Nicola left.”
Nicola looked sick.
“She was one of the eleven.”
Julian nodded.
“Number two.”
Domenico remembered a small symbol on old toy boxes.
Two scratches.
He had thought household marks.
Maybe not.
“Why become Shepherd?”
Julian’s expression changed.
“She believes children should never belong to blood families.”
Conrad stared.
“After what happened to her?”
“Yes.”
“She takes them to save them.”
Julian laughed.
“Everyone says save.”
The room became quiet.
The thirteen-year-old understood what adults were only now learning.
“Did she hurt you?”
Conrad asked.
Julian looked at him.
“Yes.”
Conrad’s fists clenched.
“How?”
Julian’s eyes hardened.
“No.”
“You can tell me.”
“No.”
“I’m your father.”
“That is not a key.”
Conrad flinched.
Domenico respected the boundary.
“What does Evelyn want now?”
Julian answered:
“Seven children.”
“Why seven?”
“Seven families once fed children into the network.”
“Ravello plus?”
“Caruso. Bellacorte. Moretti. Valenti. Hale. Voss.”
Domenico felt the world widening.
Other families.
Other wounds.
Evelyn believed she was collecting descendants from houses that created the system.
“For revenge?”
Julian shook his head.
“Replacement.”
“Of what?”
“Families.”
She wanted to break mafia inheritance by taking future heirs before families could shape them.
Then shape them herself.
Contradiction.
Same disease.
“Why Eli specifically?”
“Domenico’s only son.”
“Conrad’s line has you.”
“Yes.”
“Then two Ravello children.”
Julian stared at the plate.
“One chosen to leave.”
“Which?”
The boy looked up.
“Me.”
Conrad’s breathing stopped.
“She’s replacing you with Eli.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I refused the final lesson.”
“What lesson?”
Julian looked at Domenico.
“Kill my father.”
Conrad went still.
Julian continued:
“Evelyn told me revenge would prove I was free of blood loyalty.”
Conrad whispered:
“And?”
“I came here instead.”
For the first time, the meaning of the football became clear.
Julian was not returning property.
He was refusing an order.
He had chosen confrontation over murder.
Conrad began crying.
Julian looked uncomfortable.
Not ready for grief.
Domenico said:
“So Eli is next because you failed.”
“Yes.”
“Then we hide him.”
Julian shook his head.
“Too late.”
Domenico’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“Evelyn has someone inside the estate.”
Of course.
“Who?”
Julian looked toward the doorway.
A woman stood there.
Miriam’s longtime companion and the estate’s pediatric nurse, Claire Mason.
She had cared for Eli since birth.
May you like
Claire smiled sadly.
“Me.”
