Chapter 12

Conrad reached Claire first.

Domenico stopped him.

Again.

It was becoming a pattern.

Claire did not run.

She did not resist.

She looked at Julian.

“You weren’t supposed to say it here.”

Julian stared.

“I’m done.”

Claire’s expression softened.

“That is what Evelyn feared.”

Conrad shouted:

“You touched my son?”

Claire looked at him.

“I cared for Julian twice before he was taken.”

“Did you help?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

“Not then.”

“When?”

“Years later.”

Domenico looked at her.

“You’ve cared for Eli since birth.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To watch.”

“Prepare?”

Claire hesitated.

“Yes.”

Domenico’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing physical.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I taught routines.”

“What routines?”

“Certain songs. Words. Games.”

Julian looked toward Domenico.

“Little Wolf.”

Domenico’s blood went cold.

Claire had used the nickname.

Not others.

Her.

“What happens when he hears it?”

“Attention response.”

“What else?”

“Nothing yet.”

“Yet.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

Domenico stepped closer.

“My son is not a future tense for you.”

She looked ashamed.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You knew every morning.”

Silence.

“What did Evelyn promise you?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why?”

Claire’s expression changed.

“Because Ravello killed my brother.”

There.

Another debt.

“Who?”

“Your father.”

“Why?”

“He tried to leave.”

“Network?”

“Yes.”

Claire had grown up around one of Shepherd’s old houses.

Her brother escaped.

Raffaele’s men found him.

He died.

Claire spent decades believing blood families would always destroy children who tried to leave.

Evelyn offered another system.

She joined.

“What changed?” Domenico asked.

Claire looked at Eli’s floor above.

“Him.”

“What?”

“He trusts me.”

The answer came with shame.

“I thought I could keep distance.”

“But?”

“He calls me Miss Claire and saves me cookies.”

Domenico said nothing.

Julian looked at her.

“You were going to take him.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know.”

“That means yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“Probably.”

Conrad laughed bitterly.

Domenico did not.

He understood how dangerous uncertainty could be when adults controlled children.

“Where is Evelyn?”

Claire shook her head.

“Moves.”

“How contact?”

“Objects.”

“Like football.”

“Yes.”

“Next?”

Claire looked at Julian.

“His return changed timing.”

“What timing?”

“She wants Eli tonight.”

Domenico’s hand tightened.

“Method?”

“Garden gate.”

“When?”

“Midnight.”

“Who comes?”

“I don’t know.”

“Signal?”

Claire looked toward the steel landscaping rod visible through the window outside.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Domenico frowned.

“The rod.”

“Conrad was supposed to leave it in the flower bed.”

Conrad stared.

“What?”

Claire nodded.

“The metal rod marks the pickup point.”

Conrad’s face turned pale.

His own violent action had accidentally completed another instruction.

He had picked up the tool from beside Miriam because he was angry.

Had Miriam placed it?

She looked shocked.

Claire answered:

“I put it there.”

Domenico understood.

Ball.

Rod.

Miriam’s wounds.

Conrad’s temper.

Eli’s possession.

Nothing forced.

Everything arranged.

Evelyn did not need commands.

She curated conditions.

Domenico looked at Claire.

“What would old Domenico do now?”

She stared.

“What?”

“You watched me for years.”

“Yes.”

“What does Evelyn expect?”

Claire hesitated.

“Kill Conrad.”

Conrad looked up.

“Why?”

“For threatening Eli.”

“Then?”

“Lock Miriam away.”

Miriam closed her eyes.

“Then move Eli to the inner wing.”

Domenico stared.

“Where you have access.”

“Yes.”

The plan was elegant.

Family violence pushes Domenico to isolate his son exactly where Shepherd’s inside agent could reach him.

Domenico almost admired the design.

Then hated himself for the thought.

“What do we do instead?” Conrad asked.

Domenico looked at him.

For the first time Conrad asked rather than demanded.

“We give Evelyn what she thinks she wants.”

Julian shook his head.

“She’ll know.”

“Maybe.”

Domenico turned toward Claire.

“At midnight, you walk Eli-shaped weight to the garden gate.”

Claire frowned.

“No child.”

“No.”

“Then?”

“A football.”

Conrad looked at him.

Domenico continued:

“Shepherd built this around symbols.”

May you like

He picked up Julian’s ball.

“Let’s answer with one.”
