Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN IN THE EMPTY CHAIR

Chad stared at his wife.

“No.”

Clara looked at him.

There was sadness in her face.

Not surprise.

“Sit down.”

He did not.

Sebastian watched her carefully.

“You framed Adrian.”

Clara looked toward him.

“No.”

“August says—”

“August lies whenever truth leaves him alone.”

August’s jaw tightened.

Clara walked toward the empty chair beside Sebastian.

She placed one hand on the back.

“Adrian framed himself.”

Sebastian stared.

“What?”

“He knew someone was leaking river-yard information.”

“Who?”

“August.”

August stood.

Clara looked at him.

“Sit.”

The word was soft.

August sat.

Everyone noticed.

Fear.

Real.

Chad looked between them.

“You know her.”

August said nothing.

Clara continued:

“Adrian needed Sebastian to exile him.”

Sebastian’s face hardened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“He begged me not to.”

“Because the performance had to survive until the end.”

Sebastian remembered Adrian’s fury.

His accusation.

The fear.

Could it have been partly real?

Clara saw his face.

“He did not expect you to condemn him so quickly.”

That hurt more.

“Then the burned car?”

“Rocco.”

“Adrian knew?”

“No.”

“So Rocco hijacked the plan.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To take control.”

Sebastian stared.

“Who are you?”

Chad whispered:

“My wife.”

Clara looked at him.

“Yes.”

“And something else.”

She removed one ring.

Not her wedding ring.

A small black band worn beneath it.

Five cuts.

Helena stood.

“Hale.”

Clara looked at her.

Helena’s face had gone white.

“Your mother,” Helena whispered.

Clara nodded.

Sebastian understood.

Clara’s mother had been another Hale branch.

A family line no one considered important.

Women again.

The old fifth-seat blood.

Clara continued:

“My mother held the Shadow before Rocco.”

Chad stared.

“You never told me.”

“No.”

“You married me because—”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“I married you because I loved you.”

The use of past tense cut.

Chad heard it.

Clara continued:

“Then I watched what this family did to Adrian.”

“To Leo.”

“To you.”

Chad looked away.

Sebastian asked:

“Did you send Rocco to Chad?”

“No.”

“Did you plant Adrian’s key?”

“No.”

“Did you know Leo had it?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you stop Chad?”

Clara’s face broke.

“I thought he would threaten.”

Sebastian’s eyes hardened.

“You thought.”

She nodded.

The same poison.

“I was wrong.”

Chad looked at her.

“You watched me become that.”

“I tried to stop you.”

“Not enough.”

“No.”

They stood in the same painful truth.

Sebastian asked:

“Where is Adrian?”

Clara looked toward August.

“Ask him.”

August stood again.

Sebastian moved closer.

“Where?”

August smiled.

Then pulled a small blade from his sleeve.

Anthony moved.

August grabbed Nicholas instead.

Blade at his throat.

“Everybody stays.”

Sebastian froze.

Nicholas’s breathing changed.

August backed toward the door.

Clara looked almost bored.

“You always choose hostages.”

August’s face twisted.

“You think because your mother whispered old rituals in your ear you understand power?”

“No.”

Clara’s voice remained calm.

“I understand fear.”

She looked toward Nicholas.

“Do you?”

Nicholas’s eyes shifted.

August tightened the blade.

“Don’t.”

Clara continued:

“Sebastian will not trade the room for you.”

Nicholas stared at Sebastian.

Old Sebastian might have pretended otherwise.

Sebastian said:

“She’s right.”

Nicholas’s face changed.

August smiled.

Then Sebastian continued:

“So don’t wait for me.”

Nicholas understood.

He drove his heel backward into August’s knee.

Anthony moved.

Chad moved too.

August lost the knife.

Sebastian hit him once.

Then stopped.

No second punch.

No beating.

He needed answers.

August laughed from the floor.

“You really have changed.”

“Where is Adrian?”

August looked at Clara.

Then Sebastian.

“Rocco took him to the winter house.”

“Where?”

Helena whispered:

“That house burned twenty years ago.”

August smiled.

“Above ground.”

Sebastian’s face hardened.

“Underground?”

“Yes.”

“Alive?”

August’s smile disappeared.

“When I left him.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Silence.

Sebastian felt his heart change rhythm.

Adrian alive yesterday.

Clara stepped closer.

“Rocco?”

August looked at her.

“Waiting.”

“For who?”

August looked at Sebastian.

“Not him.”

Then at Chad.

“Not him.”

Finally toward the house windows.

“Leo.”

Sebastian’s expression turned lethal.

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

August smiled.

“You all misunderstood.”

“Rocco never needed the nursery phrase to open a door.”

“He needed Leo to say it in front of Adrian.”

Sebastian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Adrian has refused to speak for fourteen months.”

Clara whispered:

“Speak about what?”

May you like

August’s answer chilled the entire room.

“The name of the person who killed Vittorio Moretti.”
